In 1967, after releasing the glorious Sgt. Pepper, The Beatles conceived a new movie, this time for television, called Magical Mystery Tour. It was more a long music video than a movie, not having properly a plot. It was the group's first big failure.
A double-EP set was released, as the movie soundtrack. For those who doesn't know, the Magical Mystery Tour Double EP-set featured 2 disks (7 inch, 45 rpm), a coloured book with stills from the film, a lyric sheet, all in one package. The running order of the disks was:
Disk 1 Disk 2 side 1: Magical Mystery Tour side 1: The Fool On The Hill Your Mother Should Know Flying side 2: I Am The Walrus side 2: Blue Jay Way
As EPs wasn't a popular format in the United States, Capitol decided to join these disks in an album, that was filled with songs issued only on singles during 1967, on side 2. The cover was similar to the British set, but the Beatles photo was surrounded with some graphic effects in blue/yellow and with the names of songs (None of the original British LPs has the names of songs on the cover!).
This album was released in Germany in 1971, featuring stereo mixes of
Strawberry Fields Forever, Penny Lane and
Baby You're a Rich Man made specially for that release.
It was finally released in the UK, and other countries
- including Brazil - in 1976.
The album had a gatefold cover, with sleeve notes, songlist and graphics on one side, and the lyrics of the EP-set songs on the other (there aren't lyrics for the other songs). It had also an enlarged (LP size) version of the photo book.
The remastered collection finally added it to the canonical set of original albums
