One day in 1994 it happened. John and Glen began talking about the 30 year high school reunion. Wouldn't it be cool, if they could get the Neurons back together again and play for the class reunion. Plans and contacts with the other guys started being made, and the reunion band was on the way. July 1996 was going to be the first time all of the guys were going to play together publicly since 1966.
Glen and Mike had been playing on and off together through the years as the GM Connection. Glen and John would play for the families on and off. Don and Dennis had been playing for their own amusement through the years. So all had kept up pretty well with their instruments. The only problem they could see was what kind of music were they going to play. Glen enjoyed the Blues, John was into Country, Mike enjoyed the Oldies, Denny and Don hadn't really listened to much music through the years. So through a fair amount of discussion the guys had decided that since it was a school reunion, they would play mostly oldies and a couple of their originals that hadn't been heard for almost 30 years.
The night was thick with anticipation for the guys, if not for the audience. Beginning with a slightly off key "Do Wah Diddy Diddy", followed by "Everyday", with Mike singing his own composition of "Whos' Fool was I." With each song, they got better and started sounding as good as they had in 1965. After an hour, they took a break and let the Disc Jockey play for an hour. Then they were up again singing the old Beatles ballads, slipping in an original here and there. After another 40 minutes the concert was over and the Disc Jockey played again.
Through out the night, the old classmates were coming up to the guys telling them how great they sounded, and that they should get together once again. The guys just looked at each other and chuckled, knowing that this was going to be the last time. It was fun but, this was the last time.
But just between you and me, Mike and Glen have made some recordings since then. Maybe just maybe we will be hearing from the GM Connection.
