The role involved technical support for the UK division and maintenance of NT Server machines and LAN environments, as well interpreting and assigning the technical problems of the customer base to relevant support analysts.

Previous employment

August 1997- IBM Interactive Multimedia Centre

March 1998 Employed as a contractor for IBM through Manpower plc, involved as a resource co-ordinator for E-business services based at IBM Hursley, Winchester. The role involved the assessment and placement of available resource to short and long-term E-business projects (the creation of bespoke Internet based web sites, Lotus Notes solutions, and multimedia kiosks) from a group of approximately 60 people.

August 1996- IBM CSS Project

August 1997 Employed as a contractor for IBM through Manpower plc, involved in three roles at the IBM CSS project based at Hursley, Winchester:

1. Planning and Tracking Administrator

CSS Project Office (August 1996- November 1997)

Employed to work with the project Office; a team of 8 people responsible for the general administration of the CSS (Central Service System) project.

Role

  • Learnt IBM OS/2 operating system, and IBM's own internal office management system in a day.
  • Responsible for the production of daily system testing status reports, and also created and distributed the minutes of daily problem status meetings.
  • Hardware tracking of approximately 300 PC's
  • Collation, proofing and distribution of the monthly project management review report .
  • Personal one-to-one training of Lotus Freelance and Lotus Ami-Pro toproject managers

2. Stable Table Maintenance operator

CSS Data Team (November 1997- January 1997)

Transferred to a more technical role by joining the CSS Data Team. My role involved using IBM's DB2database and TREC (problem tracking) environments, which provided a further understanding of the actual CSS program.

Role

Fixed database errors

  • Assisted the team leader in producing a critical list of discrepancies between control and stable tables (approx. 600-1000 rows per table). A tenacious and methodical approach was required in order to create the complete list, the final result reduced the number of problems reported by developers dramatically.

3. CS Helpdesk Manager

AMS Team (February 1997- August 1997)

Promoted to running the CS/AMS Helpdesk. The AMS (Application Management System) Helpdesk dealt with incoming problems (obtained by testers at SE-Southern Electric) by severity and distributed/allocated them to developers who in turn provided answers or coded fixes shipped in further releases of CSS.

Role

  • Trained to use Lotus Notes, and SE's own problem management tool, INFOMAN.
  • Customer-facing, with regular communication between the IBM and customer (SE) helpdesks.
  • Conducted daily and weekly status meetings with the AMS manager and AMS team in order to ensure that the process ran smoothly.

Feedback was very positive, with the customer stating that the IBM Helpdesk performed more efficiently than other similar helpdesks at SE. I found this role very beneficial as it drew on my communications skills and enabled me to enhance my technical ability.

Interests

I enjoy Personal Computing, and am still an active member of the University of East London's ‘Internet Society'. I often cycle and have an interest in amateur boxing, weight training and martial arts, where I have reached the level of 7th KUP and received a ‘Best Senior' trophy at the VW Taekwondo academy, Eastleigh.

Additional Skills and Experience

I have achieved both the Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh's awards, where planning and group work are essential. I was also an administrator for the University of East London's computer UNIX conference system during 1992-93, and also have web-design experience (Net Objects fusion), with my own presence on the internet.
