Subject: 1997 Summer Tour Fan Reviews
7/15/97
Dear Dogstar Homepage Webmaster:
I saw the following request on your page, "Send us your reviews of
this year's tour to dogstarweb@aol.com." I just wanted you to know
that I have assembled a number of reviews of this year's tour with the
writers' permission. You can find it at the following URL:
http://www.oocities.org/Su nsetStrip/Club/4470/fans.html Please, feel
free to make a link to that page. If you any have questions,
comments, etc., please contact me.
Although you can find much more detailed opinions on that page, let me
just summarize by saying that as a whole, we fans do agree that the
guys - Bret, Rob and Keanu - really rocked this summer! The sound was
great and the music was powerful. It was brilliant to see the lyrics
"come to life." Some of us US fans were able to acquire the "OLV" CD
from fellow fans overseas, and therefore, we were able to "sing along"
with Bret at the shows. What fun!
Thanks guys for another great year.
Oh, if you can send our thanks to Dan, Kenny, both Michaels, and all the
technical engineers (or as they are affectionately known as "The
Roadies"). They may not have been on stage, but we appreciate the
hard work that goes behind a show and to do more than 50 in 70 days -
kudos to you all!
Until next tour,
Nancy
Note: Per the Gigi's request, I have edited the names of the people
she mentioned in her review by using just the initials

Subject: KR: Dogstar in Montreal
Bonjour to all 'Gazers,
De-lurking for a moment or two here. Why? I have to talk about this.
About what? About Dogstar's show in Mont-Rolland (Montreal) last
night! Wow! Quite a show!
I realize that I will sound redundant and hope that I won't bore you.
Please bear with me!
First, I have to say that it was a real pleasure for me to meet again
with KFester C. and KFesters/Gardeners S., R. A., F. and B. and meet
Keanu/Dogstar fans L. and C.. That's what's great about being a fan of
Keanu/Dogstar. You get to meet all those wonderful people! My sister S.
also came along and not being a Dogstar fan, told me that she had *really*
enjoyed the show.
S. and I were waiting in line to get into the club when we saw
this TV cameraman and lady interviewer from the "Musique Plus" channel
come our way. They started interviewing people starting at the back of
the line and on up. When she got to me, I asked her when this would be
on (attention Canadian Gardeners, video alert) and she said on Monday
(FAX show), when I asked her what time, she could not tell me! Three
minutes to the hour?... She said to watch all day long and I told her
that I have to work on Monday! She told me that she didn't really
know what time it would air and we had a good laugh. I asked if they
had met with Dogstar and she said that they had interviewed them
earlier in the afternoon. Yeah! There was also a TV crew from
"Flash" inside the club so there might be some report on the show this
week.
Okay, on to the show. I will limit my comments to Dogstar except to
say that I thought that Silver Jet was very good.
We talked a little bit with the singer after the show (outside the club) to
tell him that they had done a great show and he seemed pleased to hear it.
I had never seen Dogstar live and I was really anticipating the moment
that they would walk on stage. Boy! oh! boy! what a moment it was. I
could hardly believe my eyes at the sight of Keanu. I did look away
from him for fear that he could feel my "intense" stare and I would
embarass him (and myself) but also to kinda of let it all sink in.
Goooood looking and so close! My sister told me after the show that during
the second song, I extended my arm towards Keanu and almost touched him!
I don't remember that! Honest! Besides, I don't think I could have reached him,
it must have been the angle. Got to mention that I was sitting on a speaker (got to "feel" the music
through my ears and buttocks (!) ) some three to four feet away
from him! Only a small floor speaker separated us. And this, thanks
to B. who kept a vigil on those perfect places for us. B.,
you're beautiful! We love you!
Being so close, I had a pretty good look at Keanu's hands, eyes,
nose/nostrils , legs (yeah, I know, you got the picture) and that
famous smile etc... and I found him to be thinner
than I expected. He did not fill out his jeans and pulled them up on
one occasion. Bret did comment on it, funny! Brett was just as I
imagined him to be (size/height/etc...) and I don't understand how he
can play guitar while jumping around like he does at times. Rob
looked good too (that is one tall man) and really hammered those
drums! The funny thing about trying to look at Rob was that I had to
look around Keanu (I did not try to look between his legs for those of
you who wonder) to see him and at one time I leaned to the right and
Keanu moved into my line of sight so I leaned to the left and he did
it again! It made me chuckle. Aside from looking at the guys, and yes
I *did* listen to the music, I had a real good look at Keanu's wooden
bass and it's really neat. I want one just like it! I could not read
the brand though. Anybody knows it?
I was so intent on watching the show that I did not see this guy
(Michael) videotaping Keanu and he was but a few inches from my face!
Now talk about concentrating! Although he did not startle me, I
was quite surprised to see him there. Seems he had been there for
awhile. I got to watch through the little screen of his camera (yeah,
that's how close he was) and I believe that this guy is getting pretty
good footage of our dog boys (I saw some of Brett singing 32 stories
and it looked very good). I hope they will make a tape out of it and
that it will be sold for all of us to enjoy. I'm mostly thinking
about those of us who will not have the chance to go to a show.
The energy in the room was incredible. Bret, Rob and Keanu were
absolutely *great*. Since it's my first show, I cannot compare it to
any other but I'm told it's one of the best they've done. I will not
go into details since Francine is already working on her report and
will fill you in with the details.
One thing I have to mention though is that at the end, Keanu and Bret
"interacted" right in front of us and they had the biggest grins on
their faces that you can imagine. A much enjoyable moment for me. I
almost backed away for fear of getting hit by Bret's guitar! (okay,
maybe I'm exagerating a little bit here , it probably never got any
closer than 3 feet from me).
The show was over in no time (time really flies by when you're having
so much fun). I'm very glad to have experienced this and I hope that
those of you who are going to a show soon will have as much fun as I
have.
(excuse my screaming here but...) DOGSTAR RULES!
Have a nice day,
Gigi...

Subject: KR: Ottawa Show - Long
Reply-to: Jk
Hi Everyone!
First of all, I have to say I've only had a few hour's sleep so I hope
this is coherent.
The Ottawa show was fantastic!! Dogstar really rocked! I thought
they played really tight and they had a great time!
The guys arrived at 7:00 for a soundcheck. They came in a taxi - Bret
in front, Kenny, Keanu (in the middle) and Rob in the back. Geez, Rob
is a big guy! Keanu looked tiny compared to him! Anyway, Keanu
turned and smiled and waved when someone (sorry, I can't remember your
name) called out his name. I couldn't believe he was wearing a jacket
in the heat.
Dog* came out at 11:30. Bret said something like "It's late on a
Sunday! Tomorrow's work! You guys are rebels!" Bret and Keanu had a
great rapport going, and it was fun to watch. Keanu kept laughing at
Bret's comments and when he was goofing around with his guitar.
Bret's playing was really hot! He really seemed to be enjoying
himself. Rob introduced one of the songs (sorry, I can't remember
which one) and was really rocking!
They all looked amazing. Keanu had on the usual black t-shirt with
jeans so baggy I thought he was going to step out of them! He is
thin, but muscular, as he demonstrated when he struck one of the
"muscle" poses (I think it is called the "crab"). Bret was wearing a
white t-shirt and I could hardly see Rob (black t) as Keanu was
blocking my view, but I think Rob's hair is shorter.
I decided to do something I swore I never would again - stand right in
front of the stage. It was definitely worth it! Gina and I were
right in front of Keanu the whole time! His facial expressions run
the gamut! But it was so hot in there!! Keanu was sweating like
crazy, and kept running his hands through his hair so that it stuck up
every which way. The crowd was screaming for Bret's water (they all
had large bottles of water) and Brett sprayed the crowd with it.
Someone threw water at Keanu, and he held up his hands in self-defence
and gestured "Not me - him!" and pointed at Bret.
They played for over an hour and played 18 songs:
Forgive
Slipping Down
Breathe Tonight
Honesty Anyway
OLV
Return
No Matter What
Nobody Home
And I Pray
Behind Her
Stagger
Enchanged
Lay
Goodbye
32 Stories
Drinking Alone
Ticket
Denial
There were some problems with the sound system at the beginning, and
Keanu was yelling at someone over his bass. Bret was not too happy
either.
During Ticket to Ride, a woman jumped up on stage. I have no idea how
she got up there, as there were 4 large security men across the front
of the stage (as well as 1 at each end of the stage). The stage was
quite high - someone must have given her a leg up. She grabbed Keanu
and at first everyone was so surprised that no one moved. Bret
gestured "Help him!" and the bouncer at the front was trying to pull
her back by her t-shirt and then a few others moved in. Keanu was
laughing. They finally pried her off and practically threw her off
the stage. Some security. I think they were too busy taking away
cameras.
It was a good audience. They were really into the music and had a
good time.
Mostly I want to thank the Gardeners I met who helped make this such a
fun evening: "We'll watch your stuff - go enjoy the show" (B. & C.)
"If you can't see or if you want a better angle, we can switch spots" (Gina)
and everyone else I met in Ottawa. Thanks a lot!!
Happy touring!
Toronto tonight, Buffalo tomorrow.

I'll add my comments on the Toronto and Buffalo shows here. Toronto was OK,
but the sound was lousy (couldn't understand anything Bret said).
Keanu was doing his own private moshing but that was the extent of his
interaction -- though he did look up twice to briefly scan the back of the club.
The whole show seemed very low key. The funniest part was when Ke went over to
Bret's mic to sing on Denial and was singing about half a beat behind! Have
to say The Guvernment Club isn't the right place for them, it can hold about
1,000 so it appeared half empty, plus it's a new very modern concert venue
-- you couldn't even see Rob sitting in the back!
Buffalo though was completely different... awesome even! Lots of interplay
between the guys and the crowd who were really into the music and with quite
a few guys there! Dog* were much more relaxed and while Ke was doing less
head bobbing, they were playing up to the audience alot more... at one
point, the guys even did a short impromptu jam!! Keanu joined Bret in
singing Ticket to Ride and was still singing when he went back to his usual
spot! One interesting item: early in Bret announced there were record
executives at the show that night.
Fashion Note: No Hat! Apparently, the one Ke's been wearing lately (the
one Meredith, one of our Australian Gardeners! knitted for him) was recently
"misplaced". And the baggy black (navy blue?) pinstrip pants he's been
wearing.... hmmmm, methinks another movie costume that wasn't returned? ;-)

Subject: Detroit Dog* Report - long
Date: Mon, 21 Jul 1997 00:25:19 -0400
Okay, I'm long winded anyway so I'll try to restrain myself and make this
as brief as possible.
Detroit is and will be the only show I'll see on this tour so I can't
compare to any others but I will say that they were MUCH better than '95
and that Bret himself said that the fans in Detroit blew Pittsburgh away
(maybe a side-ways compliment here - is he saying we have big mouths??)
*grin*
The group of gardeners was actually quite large - I think I counted 12? -
so there was never a lack of excitement, conversation and fun. Four of us
in T.'s taxi pulled up right in front of St. Andrews at 3:30 - first
ones there and with curbside parking place to boot. We waited for others
then trekked to the end of the block for a bite to eat. While in this,
uhum, first-class pub, the tour bus showed up to unload equipment for
sound check - Ke was the only band member present (or at least the only
one I saw *grin*) We left our table for a few minutes to get his autograph
then came back to eat.
He wasn't very cheery BTW - looked maybe a little tired. His autograph
on my QF booklet looks almost like a flat line except for the K and the R -
wonder if that's a sign of how bad he really was feeling?
We would have been the first ones in line at 5:00 if not for a couple of
twitty little blonde line jumpers who didn't even have tickets but we
were close enough to get up front (we had 2 groups - the crazy ones
smashed in front of the stage and the smart ones sitting comfortably
in the balcony sipping cool drinks with a perfect view!) The three of
us on the floor were all in the 1st and 2nd rows. Security at the door
was pretty tight - warnings that cameras were not allowed stared while
we were in line. I got completely frisked by a woman *STAFF* person
and then the guy with her said - "We don't have time for that - just
check pockets." Oh fine - they stop after me!
The opening, opening band was called Loosh Papa - not my style so
I shouldn't say anything mean - hey, their lead guitarist was really good.
Silver Jet was good - first time I heard them. I wanted to hug the
drummer, Grant, he was so cute. He came out to the edge of the stage
after they were done to say hi and I asked him for a drum stick. He
brought out a handful and walked along the barrier passing them out. I
managed to get one but later regretted it because I had to stick it down
the front of my shorts to keep from losing it or poking out an eye in the
pushing and shuffling going on.
The crowd was pretty calm until after Dog* was set up and the stage lights
were turned off - then the gigglers and shriekers started bouncing
at every shadow. Without going into great detail, I spent the whole show
with a screamer/constant talker in my right ear and the person on my left
side stroking the back of my hair most of the night - nothing else got
stroked though, or the drumstick would have left the shorts and been used
as a weapon! Never figured out what her deal was but my elbow hitting her
ribs has to have left a bruise. The first two rows of people were great
but that 3rd row behind us...gotta wonder.
Dog* sounded very good but seemed a bit subdued. There was some
action going on with Bret and Keanu but for the most part they just played.
I liked their 2 new songs and the new cover - the crowd responded best
to Honesty Anyway - probably the only one most of them have heard.
The set list sounds about the same as the other shows - Bret DID do 32
Stories the first song in the encore. Rob had his shirt off by like the
second song - BTW for all the Mailhousewives out there, your man is
getting plenty to eat .
Keanu looked thin (my personal preference) but not *too* thin. He
had good color - his hair was especially shiny - looked freshly shampooed
- sticking up to the max all over and seems to have grown a bit since the
first part of the tour. He wore jeans, blue T-shirt and boots - no hat but
he was wearing it when he showed up for sound check. Believe me -
it was entirely too hot in this place to be wearing a hat!!
I noticed that Keanu played the last song of the set and all of the encore
(5 songs total) without his pick - he had one the first part of the night.
I think he dropped it (looked around the floor kind of strangely one time)
and just never got another. I liked his playing without a pick better -
showed his long fingers!
After the show we waited (in T.'s air conditioned limo still at
curb-side) for the bus to leave. Keanu came out but was quickly across
the street to the bus - protected by Detroit policemen. Bret and Rob came
out at almost the same time and hung around to autograph for everyone that
was left (crowd thinned way out once Keanu was out of sight). I got
Bret and Rob to sign the QF book (now I have all 3 in the same place!)
and we left once the bus did.
And to close (I know, I know, shut up already!) - all in all I had a great
time! I got revenge on the nasty people behind me by raising my arms
and bouncing around the whole time (Poor girl behind Angie: I could
hardly see Keanu because some dumb bitch in front of me kept her
arms up and jumped around like an idiot the whole time - never mind
that I couldn't keep my hands off her hair!) In defense of my annoying
movement - it kept my space a little larger and allowed more air
to circulate - I actually felt cooler even though I was basically doing
high impact aerobics! Besides, once my arms were up, everyone
closed in and I couldn't put them down! And to ONE VERY
rude (fill in the worst name you can think of to call a person here) who
commented that if we didn't like being completely plowed over (some
did hit the floor - no flowers though) then we shouldn't be down there,
"This IS a general admission show!" I can only say that general admission
means first come, first served not cause bodily injury to those that WERE
there waiting in line for 3 hours!! Oh, and thank you so much for the
protection, Mom! *grin*
I went only expecting to hear a good show - which I did. I *hoped* to
get the boys' autographs and I did. I *hoped* to get within a foot of
Keanu - and I did. I wanted a tour shirt and CD - got those. I was
excited to meet the many gardeners that came, some I'd mailed back
and forth to before and thought were so sweet - found out I had
underestimated that sweetness! It was a great night for me! One I
will never forget! Thanks to everyone (you know who you are) for
making it so memorable.
Angie - who after this incredible day, came home to find that her
darling husband had very kindly taped the short local news spot/
interview with Keanu!
More to come....
