BIO
When I was in Kato, we practiced at the drummer's house. One day, I started to notice the drummer's brother had started a band. They were initially called Faceless Masses, but by the time of their first show, they became known as Death By Defecation, and it stuck.
Musically, they seemed to me to be a fusion of angry 80's hardcore and newer sounding punk like Propagandhi, complete with socially conscious, politically aware lyrics, as well as criticism directed at the scene itself.
In Spring of 2001, I was offered a position playing bass in the band and I accepted it since they seemed to me to be the most promising of the up-and-coming Sarnia bands.
One of the memorable shows I played with DBD was this Amnesty International Benefit at Dow People Place. We were one of two punk bands on the bill - the rest were arty, or like "Blues-Hammer" (obscure Ghostworld reference). Bill Hall was drunkenly moshing and stalking around terrorizing a lot of the non-punk rock people involved in the event, and most of the punks there were generally unruly (this was good though). This was the day after the anniversary of the June 15 riots in Toronto, which DBD had a song about, so this was cool. I think we got the power cut-off on us during our set. It was generally as could be expected at an event such as this, but fun nonetheless. - Stu
Daryl called it quits after our last show (not scheduled as our last) because he felt there wasn't interest (both from members and audience) in it anymore and it was getting harder and harder to do practices with all the members. It was just a matter of everyone being busy, and Stu moved away in September 2001, leaving Daryl with no desire to acquire new members. - Daryl and Stu
Me, Blair and Bill were at a show together after our last show, and we were bugged to get on and do a song or two... it was rather strange because our last show was to 6 bored, jaded and uninterested people. We reluctantly got on and alot of people were really into it, and were acting like we were important (wrong). All I could ask was 'Where the hell were all of you when we played our last show?'. One kid even came up to me and asked "Were you in DBD?" "Yeah, why?" "Whoa." What the hell??? I should have been flattered, but I guess I was just frustrated because no one gave a shit until we were dead. - Daryl
