My Arsenal (1999)
l to r: '97 Fernandes APB-4, '89 Aria Pro-II XRB, "The Mongrel",
'70's Univox Ventures, Stuntman 3/4 bass.- 1997 Fernandes APB-4 (vintage oil finish)
("I had my eye on this one for several months and finally gave into temptation back in May of '99. This bass has two Jazz-Bass pickups, gold hardware and some amazing active electronics. I used it on 'E-M-P' and 'The Metro'. It has become my main live and recording bass.Go to the Links page and click on thelink to the review I wrote about this bass to learn more about it.")- Bentley Series 10 Five-String (gunmetal)
("I believe this one is bone stock except for the Jim Dunlop Strap-Loks I have installed. Two active Jazz-Bass style pickups and an output jack mounted where it is supposed to be, near the strap-button Finally! This is my newest acquisition and, as yet, I really haven't had the chance to put it through it's paces. For a low-budget line it has alot going for it, nice workmanship and design.
The body style and pickup configuration is similar to the Fernandes, which is a fave lay-out of mine. With some tweaking I think it will play well for something with that wide of a fretboard. I love the look of this bass and the fact they didn't ruin it with some stupid set of dot inlays. Odds are I'll wind up only using this for tunes with lowered tunings and I'll probably tune it D-E-A-D-G, low to high, but who knows?!")- "No Name" (red) 80's-vintage P-Bass copy. Modifications include new tuning machines, pickguard, electronics and a vintage Fender bridge.
("This bass has been lying around for years and I just never got around to putting it back together till the holidays. It's got a meaty 80's-vintage tone and plays pretty much like a standard P-Bass. Right now I don't plan on doing anything special with this one but every bassist has to have some sort of P-Bass in his arsenal, right?")
- late-80's Aria Pro-II XRB (black) Modified with a Bartolini pickup in the bridge position.
(Now in the collection of Dan Hall, Charleston, WV)
("This is was main bass, bought it used in 1989 and it was a great instrument ever, never let me down and stayed in tune no matter what I put it through. I also loved the feel of this bass, it felt contoured to my body when I played it. I don't think they make these anymore, and it's a shame. I used it on 'E-M-P', except for one short section and all of 'Nine Hours Later'.In alot of ways I hated to get rid of her, but all things must pass.")- "The Mongrel" (blonde) a 70's vintage P-Bass copy created from parts of numerous basses.
("A dream to play a nightmare otherwise. This bass has been with me through almost my whole career. I actually bought it from Laramie Roush while he was in Hanover Fist, I believe that was around 1986 or so, and through the years it has been altered in so many ways I can't name them all...I am considering some major work on this bass, beginning with an EMG Select SEP pickup and new electronics. I am also considering a fretless conversion as well.")
("This is another bass that has been around forever, a 32" scale neck. It is a copy of the old Mosrite Ventures and I love the body style. I believe it was made back in the 70's. Like 'The Mongrel,' this bass has seen it's better days and has been modified in so many ways I can't remember a third of them. I actually had two that are within a thousand in serial number, but the second one was minus alot of hardware; I got the second one from Casey Moore of Warchylde a long time ago and recently traded it off. Oddly enough I have researched a little and these were evidently made by Aria in Japan, so I've played on Aria's since about 1985.")
I know nothing about this bass except when I saw it I had to have it. It's neck is alot like "The Mongrel" (above) and the amount of low-end is amazing from such a tiny instrument. The previous owner was some 9 year-old kid who played it in a Gospel bluegrass band so I can just imagine the he** this thing was put through in it's life.) - Epiphone Les Paul four-string (Cherryburst)
This is actually Ron's bass, but I am planning on using it as a backup anytime any of mine are in for repairs. This bass has a nice boomy low-end and not as heavy as I thought it would be.
AMPLIFICATION/ENCLOSURES
"Crate Corner", Syd and Larry Roush's live setup, April, 1999.
- Epiphone Head Jammer Bass Headphone Amplifier
- Crate CR-EX Enclosure w/ 1x12" Speaker -80's vintage ("You gotta' love these ugly old things!")
- 70's vintage Fender Bronco Guitar Amp (currently being rebuilt.)
KEYBOARDS
("Actually a kid's toy of a keyboard, half-size keys and 100 voices, 90% of which are unusable, but the bass and string sounds are amazing, they remind me of the ones on the old DX-7s.")
- Casio Casiotone MT-600
("Another cheap keyboard, but the sounds on this one are top notch, especially with a little digital processing. I've actually wound up using this one more than any of my own; all of "Nine Hours Later" was recorded with it and some of "E-M-P". This keyboard actually belongs to a good friend of mine, Chip. Thanks for the loan bud!")
