BOY (1980)

I was only 2 years old when U2's debut album came out so I only listened to it post-The Joshua Tree et al.

I really like this album as it gave me a good perspective of U2's sound prior to them hitting it big. Edge's familiar guitar ring is there and it sounds as cool as ever. Plus, Boy gave us the catchy classis, "I Will Follow", which Bono has described as a song about a child's unquestioning love and devotion to his/her nother ("If you walk away walk away, walk away walk away, I will follow").

Lyrically, most of the songs sound like they were inspired by the death of Bono's mother as well as their coming of age. A definite MUST for any U2 collection.

My Fave Tracks: I Will Follow, Out Of Control, An Cat Dubh, Stories For Boys, A Day Without Me, Shadows and Tall Trees.

AWESOME album, especially for a debut album! First off i want to say EDGE KICKS BUTT on this album! Electric Co. is in my opinion U2's greatest guitar song of all time! The solo is amazing while still simple and easy to play. I don't know how Edge comes up with the stuff he does, it's incredible!

Bono's lyrics are way sophisticated and meaningful seeing as how he's just a kid in this album! (hmm can we all say "Hanson" and laugh our heads off?) Larry seems like more of a background member to the band, as his fills aren't as complex as they are in other albums, but it definitely gave him great experience so he could kick butt later on.

The best thing about the album is definitely guitar, so if you're as big of an Edge fan as me you'll really love this album!

I think that "Boy" is a great album. They were so young when that was made. That is my favorite album. Bono's lyrics are so powerful to me I can't really understand what were going through back then, I LOVE IT THEY KICK ARSE!!!!!!!!!!

U2 arises from the ashes of Post-Punk on their debut "Boy". Who would have expected such a great record? This record screams of teen angst,a theme picked up again in the early 90`s (funny how things come and go in a circle). The guitar work here is revolutionary, especially on tracks like "I Will Follow", "Electric Co." and "An Cat Dubh/Into The Heart". Bono`s howling voice is the perfect tool for his lyrics of desparation and sadness. You can feel the drama in his voice and his phrasing. Without knowing it,they paved the way for a new sound in the early 90`s,the "alternative"(I hate that bloody term" genre of music).
