"dedicated to bring you the latest in beck news and rumors"
bottles and cans is a webpage page dedicated to bringing you the latest news and rumors on the folk/hip-hop/alternative artist beck.. it's improving all of the time, so be sure to check back every week or so.. hopefully it'll be slammin' enough to "regulate".. (if you've ever been to a beck show, you'll know what i'm talking about)..

beck.. comin' at'cha in '97

this is a picture of beck performing live at Varsity Arena in Toronto, Ontario on April 3rd of this year.. he was amazing.. as anybody who was there can certainly attest.. thanks to Adam in Williamsville, NY for sending me in the setlist.. his first five songs or so were off of 'Odelay'.. then he broke down into an acoustic set with lots of stuff from 'One Foot in the Grave' and 'Stereopathetic Soulmanure'.. he then jammed out with some block rockin' beats from the new cd.. the only song off of 'Mellow Gold' was Beercan..

seeing beck live is an amazing experience.. with the help of his six piece band (a guitarist, bass player, two horn guys, a drummer and a slammin' dj) he perfectly blends a fantastic live sound with elements of the albums.. imagine 'High Five (Rock the Catskills)' live!

because there are already so many great beck pages out there on the web, i've decided that this page isn't going to simply be another place to get pictures, sounds, movies, etc.. that's not to say that this page isn't going to have ANY of that kind of stuff (i.e. if i get something rare or something nobody else has i'll post it), but this page is going to predominately concentrate of getting the latest beck news and posting it here for beck fans around the world.. news including info on new albums, tours, personal info, award nominations,... basically anything new and interesting on our best friend beck hansen..

if you want pictures and sounds and stuff, check out some of the other beck pages around.. beck fans (aside from having great taste in music) are totally creative and have made up some really excellent sites worth checking out.. i've provided links to many of them below..

welcome to beckwatch! just something i wanted to try out.. beckwatch is simply a summary of all the news/rumors that get posted in the latest news section.. just an easy way to keep up to date on what mr. hansen is up to.. and an even easier way for all us beckheads to quickly keep track of what the man is doin'! of course, you can always get all the info below, or in the older news area.. or just click on the can in front of the item and jet directly to the full story! beckwatch: email me and let me know if this is a good idea, or just a nuisance..

Steve,

As an introduction, I'm a producer of nationally syndicated radio programs with a company called MediaAmerica, and I've just finished producing a one hour special called "Beck: Up Close." It's an indepth profile of Beck's life and music and is based on interviews from a variety of sources, including one we did with him a few weeks ago up in Boston.

The show will be aired on over 100 stations around the country beginning the week of 7/28/97. Anyone interested in hearing this program should call their local radio station for the exact day and time and if they're not airing it find out why!

I Hope this is of interest to you and that you can make use of it. Also, if you can get this information out there I'd appreciate any feedback from listeners. they can e-mail me at Decibailes@aol.com

Many thanks, David Bailes

PS: I gave your great Beck web site a plug in the show. Hope you don't mind.

no dave.. i do NOT mind.. however.. i fear that because of my trip i probably missed the show on my local station.. did anybody out there catch it? does anybody know if there are still any upcoming broadcasts? if so.. email me and let me know!

beck - sonic youth - built to spill - elliot smith project - quasi

and here are some other juicy tidbits of information for you to feast on..

date: july 7/97

this from Wall of Sound:

Beck, Foo Fighters, Sonic Youth Headline Bumbershoot

Seattle residents will be able to catch Beck, Sonic Youth, the Foo Fighters, and plenty of others--all for the price of a movie and large popcorn. That's because on Labor Day, some of the biggest names in music will descend on the Emerald City for Bumbershoot, the annual arts festival. The event, which includes twenty-five stages, is entering its twenty-seventh year, and ticket prices are still a reasonable nine dollars in advance, or ten dollars at the gate. And once you're in the gate, every single act is covered--so a ten-spot will bring you musical sets that, at any other venue, could cost you anywhere from fifteen to fifty dollars a pop. In addition to musical acts, the festival showcases theatre, film, literature--almost every kind of art under the sun. Other performers coming to Seattle for the weekend include Sheryl Crow, Joan Osborne, Kristin Hersh, Wilco, and Spearhead. The festival kicks off on Friday, August 29, and wraps up three days later, on Monday, September 1.

i've also heard something about a beck/sonic youth show in Estacada, Oregon on (or around) august 28.. as soon as i get confirmation.. i'll let you know..

date: july 3/97

hey again.. it's been a long while since i've really updated anything around here.. so let me apologize first of all for neglecting the site.. fortunately, beck really hasn't been doing to much 'newsworthy' stuff for me to report, so i kinda lucked out.. i guess.. anyways.. i'm back for a little while before i head off to Florida for two weeks.. during that time there won't be any updates here.. so i'll try to cram as much new news as i can in here until then..

so what's beck been up to? well, touring and shooting the video for 'jackass'.. here's the premise of the video from MusicCentral..

Beck Bags Willie As Wizard

Everybody's favorite mastermind of fun, Beck, recently shot the fourth video from his Grammy-winning Odelay album. The video's subject, the track "Jackass," features a prominent sampling from the Bob Dylan song "It's All Over Now Baby Blue" as performed by the '60s band Them - Van Morrison's band as a teenager.

The video was directed by Beckšs longtime friend and director, Steve Hanft, who has also made "Loser," "Beercan," "Pay No Mind," and "Where It's At," as well as the feature film "Kill The Moonlight." The soundtrack to that low budget film is out now and showcases previously unreleased Beck songs.

Beck's most recent video was shot in black and white and features the artist as a coal miner. Near the end of the video, Willie Nelson makes a bizarre cameo as a wizard - he wears a robe and rides in a mining cart, sprinkling a magical, sparkling dust, while accompanied by a white dog.

Reportedly, the first person approached for the prized wizard role was Johnny Cash, who declined. The next choice was the albino Winter brothers, Johnny and Edgar - talk about your white magic.... When they were unavailable, Willie Nelson graciously assumed the role of the honorary wizard, even delaying a flight to L.A. in order to don the robe. A true trouper - he only balked at wearing the silly hat. We can hope to see the video in a month, although we'll be watching it scratching our heads trying to figure out what it could possibly all mean.
oh yeah.. i don't know how many of you caught beck's 'performance' on the PBS special 'On Tour', but apparently, it was pretty lame..
