Mojo is a German shepherd that Lestat found behind a town house in Georgetown just before he switches body with Raglan James. Lestat falls in love with him immediately. He reminded Lestat of his youth in France and his mastiffs. The word Mojo is a good charm in voodoo, used for protection. Mojo gives to Lestat the sense of something good and meaningful in the world.
Mojo symbolizes loyalty and the ability to see beyond appearances. Behind Mojo’s demonic appearance, hides a warm and tender soul. This is a reverse metaphor for Lestat himself. He wishes he looked like the devil and was yet he was full of sense of goodness. Also, when Lestat and Raglan James switched body, Mojo was somehow able to recognize the Lestat in James?body.
After hearing Armand’s story about Marius, who killed only the evil-doer, Lestat believes that Marius understands how to bring goodness into vampirism. As a mortal, Lestat had always been obsessed about being good. So now as an immortal, he wanted to learn how to be a good vampire also.
He was covered in deep, plush fur, beautifully golden and gray in places, and overlaid with a faint saddle of longer black hairs. His overall shape was that of a wolf, but he was far too big to be a wolf, and there was nothing furtive and sly about him, as is the case with wolves. On the contrary, he was wholly majestic in the way that he sat staring motionless at the door. (TVL)
