Tom Cruise was cast as Lestat de Lioncourt. Anne Rice and her fans were furious at first at the casting of Tom Cruise and Lestat. She thought that although he had talent, his voice was too high and he was all too American, nothing like the androgynous, fair-haired European, Lestat.
The outcried was ignored and the production of the film continued. After Anne Rice saw the movie however, she bought two pages in Daily Variety to make a public apology, stating how impressed she was with Cruise's performance.
Interview With The Vampire earned nearly $40 million on its first weekend, which made it the fourth largest non-holiday-weekend opening in movie history. The vampires in the movie were less elegant and more brutal though. A few scene in the movie, involving females victim were bloodier, earning the movie and R rating. Some essential aspect such as the blood tears was ignored. Claudia and Armand in the movie was also portrayed much more older. But other than that, overall, the movie had been faithful to the book.
