RED JEZEBEL: Perth Pop No
Longer?
Jebediah. Ammonia. Eskimo Joe. Beaverloop. Perth is well and truly on the
map, largely thanks to the continuing exploration of Western Australian
style - upbeat, funtime guitar pop, that is. Red Jezebel vocalist and guitarist
Paul Wood has long since caught the power pop bug. "The Perth indie cred
thing grabbed us so the sound came out that way," he says. Made up of Wood,
Chris Hayes on guitarand vocals, Alex Hyman on drums and Mark Cruickshank
on bass, Red Jezebel arrived in 1997. "The first couple of months
we just cut sick," says Wood. "I hate watching bands who just stand there
and do the occasional bunnyhop." Little wonder they were awarded "Most
Promising Band of the Year" at the local Kiss My WAMIs awards in 1998.
A national outing with Bodyjar and Jebediah further honed the power pop
sound. But Wood sees change coming on the band's debut album, which they
hope to release mid-'99. "I'd like to go back to the more serious side,
away from the pop rock," he says, "because it's starting to get on my nerves.
It's a bad thing to say, because playing pop rock live is just a thrill.
But I'd like to do something
a little different."
