Minus a bass player, the Red Jez arrived onstage at 2pm. The lack of
bass wasn't really an issue as it gave the 'Jez a more "unplugged" sound,
which was suitable to the mosh-free laid back feel of the gig.
Thier set opened with three failed attempts at starting a new song (the title of which I unfortunately missed. Sorry.), which led to them giving up on it and going with Giddy Up instead. They played through a few other tracks from Joyful Possiblities in good form, then moved onto In Transit's pearler, Soothers, to drummer Alex's obvious disgust, playing it in great form. They then did a jazzed up version of Rum and Raison, called Rum and Cocktails. This got a few laughs but I actually liked it better than the original. They then played the song they tried at the start of the set and delivered it luuurvely. This better be a track on an upcoming CD 'cause it's very funky and I love those little guitar strummy interludey bits. They finished up on the crowd pleaser Sail, which sounded as strange as all the other tracks without bass. But it was still a good rendition (save Paul's fumbling with the opening bars). It all seemed a little half hearted, as the Jez were all sitting down. Some movement would have been nice; I mean the music was good but there was nothing really to watch except Paul shaking his head occasionally. Ah well. It was free... :) |
