Laurel Aitken remembers his recording
debut at Motta's studio: "The first recording that I did, I did it for
myself, that was a song called "I Met A Senorita". I used my own
money and got my own musicians - nobody that's living now. The saxophonist
[went by] the name of "Number One" - he was well known in those days. Then
I did a merengue, "Merenguita", and it was released by a man that
had a record shop on King Street, by the name of Mr. De Pass." (Katz 2003,
p. 14)

"the featured
drummer, according to Aitken, was 'a guy called Feely-Feely, from the same
area we came from, the Greenwich Town - Maxfield Avenue area'." (Katz 2003,
p. 21)
Turner/Schoenfeld
2002 note as year of release 1959: this is two years after Ghana's independence
in 1957! I think the release must have coincided with the year of independence.

(Turner/Schoenfeld

is also relevant for this number.

-
Aitken's Boogie
released on:

Prod. by Dada
Tawari
" 'That was
done for Tewari as well [as for Ken Khouri, braunov], with the same band
with Number One', notes Laurel Aitken, 'and Crackers was the drummer.'
" (Katz 2003, p. 17)
"the crudely
recorded disc sounded like a Jamaican band that wanted to play R&B
but hadn't learned the rules yet, which is exactly what it was. The flip,
"Cherrie" was less remarkable and hinted at Laurel's Cuban origins. Crude
and erratic or not, this was the first Jamaican R&B music to see issue
in Britain." (Koningh 2003)

7": Kalypso
XX 18 /UK, ca. 1960
Prod: Chris
Blackwell
"a record that used mostly white
Canadian musicians and was clearly influenced by the Memphis blueman Roscoe
Gordon. Recorded at Federal Studios (owned by Khen Khouri). Released 1958
on Blackwell's own R&B label in Jamaica and in the same year in the
UK on Starlite (a subsidiary of British jazz label Esquire)." (Barrow/Dalton
1997, p. 21)
Release date by Turner/Schoenfeld
2002 (p. 6) is 1960
Following Aitken as quoted by David
Katz, the tracks were recorded at JBC. "Boogie In My Bones" entered
the JBC charts in October 1959. (Katz 2003, p. 20)
""Boogie In My Bones" was
a fully formed R&B, with walking bass, a snaking sax solo, a nimble
guitar solo (which sounds like the work of the technically brillant Ernest
Ranglin) and ponding piano, it appeared more or less simultaneously in
mid-1960 on Kalypso and on Carlo Krahmer's Starlite label. This was the
one that broke the music in Britain, as evidence by the copies that
frequently turn up second-hand, all of which have clearly been played and
enjoyed to a great degree! The Kalypso issue (XX18), is a oddity, for it
shares its issue number with another 45 by Count Sticky, and it is much
rarer than the Starlite disc. It also credits the Jamaican copyright holders
as Caribou Records, a company run by one Dada Tuari, whereas in fact the
disc first appeared in Jamaica on a label run by a young Chris Blackwell."

(The Godfather Of Ska Vol. 5) (CD: Grover /D)
Married'. Die Nummer ist ein ironischer Querverweis auf Dandy Livingstones
60s-Ska-Klassiker "A Message To You Rudy" und lässt die jamaikanische
Rebellen-Figur nicht mehr in Vororten nach Schlägereien trachten,
sondern stattdessen heiraten.
