Pink Floyd .. My kinda sound..
After coming and going in small groups without a particular musical identity , the group finally emerged in 1966 with a definite ID in psychedelic music, and a line-up of Syd Barrett (vocals/guitar) , Roger Waters (bass) , Richard Wright (keyboards) and Nick Mason (drums).
They began by playing at various early underground haunts in London, steadily though climbing the ladder till they became regulars at London's Hippiest club UFO. Early 1967 sees their first single Arnold Lane recorded at EMI, followed by See Emily Play and by August their very first album - Piper at the Gates of Dawn
Syd Barrett's highly erratic behaviour (attributed to drugs he was taking..) eventually led to his replacement by David Gilmoure in 1968. Although the group had lost Barrett's lyrics, they demonstrated their ability to survive through Waters' incredible instrumental and electronic work in their 2nd album A Saucerful of Secrets .Their subsequent concerts now reveal their increasing professionalism and imagination in the combination and use of lighting and sound.
Their increasing interest in soundtrack music leads to scores for More/1969 , The Committee /1969 , Zabriskie Point /1970 , The Body /1970 and Obscured by Clouds /1972 .
Ummagumma double album in 1969 features live recordings at Bermingham and Manchester ,and 1970's Atom Heart Mother tops the UK Charts (without actually being that impressive in comparison to other work..).The obvious follows : extremely successful concerts (including a 100,000 attendance at Hyde Park) and hard work leading to their next work Meddle/1971 , having in the meantime made a film at Pompeii, which premiered at the Edinburgh festival.
And then it comes .. The Dark Side of the Moon/1973 , the culmination of various ideas over the years, centered on death and emotional breakdown, a dark pessimism evident in Waters' songwriting. Despite the bleakness of theme, the production was stunning! The album became their biggest seller, remaining in the UK charts for over two years and the U.S. charts for over TEN !! , making it the longest running LP in recording hisory.
The album was followed by a six-month retirement, and then by various projects and concerts (US tour in 1975). It was therefore two and a half years until they recorded their next album Wish You Were Here/1975 which was rather anticlimactic, met unfavourable reviews, but -ofcourse- sold like mad ..
1976 found them touring Europe and the States, while in early '77 they released Animals.
And in 1979 comes one more phenomenally selling Album The Wall , which also led to a spin-off film under the same name, starring Bob Geldof of the Boomtown Rats. Their next album is prophetically titled The Final Cut/1983 since it is followed by Roger Waters now touring on his own using old PF film footage, and Wright, Gilmour and Mason going on the road with all the Floyd paraphernalia.. Legalities went on for a long time as to the rights of Pink Floyd related stuff.
Roger Waters continues his solo carreer, which includes a fabulous live performance of The Wall at the site of the Berlin Wall ,with a number of top guest performers.
The remaining Pink Floyd, continue their extravagant concerts on world-wide tours, releasing a double live album Pulse with pieces from the very beginning upto their penultimate album The Division Bell
