Neil is a supporter of Artists Against Racism and counts AAR cofounder Mendelson Joe among his friends.

Modern Drummer readers voted Neil "Best Rock Drummer" each year from 1980-88, "Best Multipercussionist" from 1983-86, and voted him to the MD Hall of Fame in 1983. Neil, with Rush, also boasts eight Juno awards, two Grammy nominations, and recently received the Order of Canada.
