Ben plays bass in the band Majosha. Other members are Millard Powers on guitar, Dave Rich (then Chris Brown, then Eddie Walker) on drums, and for short periods Rob Strictland and Evan Olsen. Their first gig was the Battle of the Bands at Duke University, which they won. They released one ep, Party Night: Five Songs About Jesus (which contained four songs, none of which had anything to do with Jesus) and one album, Shut Up and Listen to Majosha.

Ben forms a new band, Pots and Pans. The members are: Ben on drums, Evan Olsen on bass and Britt "Snuzz" Uzzell on guitar and vocals.

Ben releases his first solo album, Volume 1 under the name Fear of Pop. Produced by Caleb Southern, it features appearances by William Shattner and Frally Hynes (Ben's wife). The music is quite different to his Ben Folds Five writing. It consists of spoken word, samples and electronica, but still retains some familiar characteristics such as his talent for impeccable melodies.

The band's fourth and final album, The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner is released.
Ben announces that he is moving to Adelaide, Australia and that he and girfriend Frally Hynes are having children.

Ben and Frally marry with a quiet ceremony for friends and family at their Hyde Park home.

Frally gives birth to twins: a boy and a girl. Louis Frances Folds was born at 11:04 PM on Thursday, July 22 and Gracie Scott Folds was born at 1:54 AM on Friday, July 23.

29th: At a show in Scranton, Pennsylvania Don Walters joins the band onstage to play piano for One Angry Dwarf.

The band members amicably part ways to focus on solo careers and other projects, feeling that the band had run its course.
"The band is splitting on good terms. We are very proud of our three albums, our little hit and our audience. Now it is time to bow out with dignity rather than to make that final 'cash-in' record and tour which, of course, is very tempting."
