3D Game
Still in the planning stages, our goal is to create a short (~5 hours) third person game that takes advantage of the excellent Crystal Space 3D engine. Presently, work is being done to ready the engine for this game. The following features have been added to a test application:
- Simple 3rd person motion
- Fog (dynamic if necessary)
- Level loading at startup
- (Physics correct) Jumping
- Dynamic lighting
- Sprite action allowable only within a certain area (push A when near statue to move statue)
- Collision detection sprite-sprite
- OpenGL renderer
- Resolution set by player
- Dynamic sprite creation
- 2D images on screen (pixmaps)
We will need much help with this game (this means you!). The goal is to make the game somewhat innovative. Thus far, this is the idea for the game, although it is not close to finished, and we may drop it entirely in favor of a new game.
The game will be a first person shooter, wherein the main basis of the game is a war, and its domestic effects. Or something like that.
You control one of roughly a half dozen controllable characters. At any time in the game, you may change to any other of your controllable characters, which will pause the game for roughly half a second in a third person view before pulling into the new character and changing to a third person camera. Perhaps on the pause screen there exists a simplified overhead map of the game world, which shows colored dots for characters--different colors for different alignments, such as blue dots for guys on your side, green dots for enemies of one type, and red dots of another enemy type. Rather than being represented by dots, key characters will be represented by numbers. This map on the pause screen will allow you to know whether or not you would want to change your character.
You, in this game, play the role of a member of a large town. The town will really exist within the game; in fact, you will be able to walk around in it and enjoy it when you are not fighting. In that regard, the game will be part simulation. But you are only allowed to enter a rare, small number of buildings. Hopefully, there will be some sort of sniper rifle within the game, although we'll have to see when we do research. The game takes place in the past, perhaps the nineteenth century. Making the game take place in the past creates some credibility as to why your small town is fighting unaided with low-firepower weapons.
The plot of the game, or as close to a plot as the game has, is that your town's army wants to take over the region. The region consists of four towns (your own included), so you've got your work cut out for you. You will only conquer one town at once, though. All towns will have a physical representation; moreover, as you destroy buildings, the models used for the original buildings will be replaced by models of uglier buildings in worse condition. The actual fighting consists of a small number of soldiers. You get to tell them rough commands of how to fight (follow me; strong attack, strong defense; &c.). You will be able to control only two or three of the soldiers. The other characters you control will be a bit more random, like the arms supplier, or...well, use your own creativity here. These characters will be woven together in a sort of story, not very strong, but at least it will make making the game's ending a bit easier :o)
The battles take place in a mission-style set of commands. For example, one mission might be to assassinate the leader of a certain town. If you follow the missions in a timely fashion, you'll be guaranteed to win. However, you are not required to follow the missions, so you can have fun, too, or do pretty much whatever you want. Not always a good idea, but a fun idea.
I also am planning on writing a semi-realistic weather simulator, so a condition such as rain will subtly affect gameplay. Or, at least, it'll look cool :)
Life Sim
The life sim is a text-based simulation game that will be deep enough to simulate many of the practices of everyday life in a fantasy world. Presently, you can explore, eat, fight enemies, and find treasures. This game may take a while to make, and is the dream, goal, and work of a single programmer.
Misty
Misty is the working title of a game featuring ray-traced graphics, made with the free POV-Ray raytracer. Several attempts have been made to begin creating this game, but all have failed. However, Misty represents the desire of the creator (Mike Damert) to use a ray-tracing program to create semi-realistic images. Misty will run on a 2D engine which already work. Another of its goals is to make a new, confusing but exciting experience for the player.
