Tech Note #5
|
The /pub/disks directory of the shop ftp site contains disk images of several utilities and installers. Technicians will find all of these disks handy; most are essential.
a. LockIt95 v2.3 (rev.98) (2 Disk Set) - the latest version of the WSD#1 Windows 95 Workstation Locking Strategy. Open L95REV98.RTF on disk two for detailed instructions on how to install and use this software. Disk two is also a bootable utility diskette.
b. NT Update disk (use with Summer 98 routines) - the latest version of the "team leader" diskette to update division NT servers and domains. Now runs in menu mode which allows the technician the option of running all, some, or none of the various options.
c. Windows 3.1x Anti-Virus Install v2.42 (4 Disk Set) - the latest version of the WSD#1 Windows 3.1x Anti-Virus Installer/Updater.
d. Windows 9x Anti-Virus Installer v2.42 (4 Disk Set) - the latest version of the WSD#1 Windows 9x Anti-Virus Installer/Updater.
e. Summer 98 Routines disk - used by the crews during the summer of '98, this diskette aids in software and hardware inventory, preventative maintenance, and system diagnosis.
f. Workgroup Connection v2.39 with DOS 6.2 utilities - a bootable network disk which will function with all the network cards in common use in the division, a network connection installer disk, and also a DOS 6.2 hard drive prepping disk.
g. Network Card Setter Utilities v2.37 - a bootable diskette with the software for setting all the network cards in common use in the division, including D-Link DE220, DE250, and DE530, Intel EtherExpress 16 and Pro, and 3Com 3C509, 3C590, and 3C900. Although some of these are plug-and-play cards, it is very handy to have these utilities to ensure your network card is set correctly. Boot from the disk, or run LIST on the diskette to see full instructions.
h. Windows NT Configuration disk - the latest version of the diskette you require in conjunction with the division backup CD to perform a standard, semi-automatic Windows NT 3.51 Domain Controller installation. Print out and read the Works 3 document NT-CHECK.WKS from the disk for more information.
i. What happened to Quick Lock? Some techs have been looking for Quick Lock v2.32 for Windows 3.1x. This used to be included on disk 2 of the LockIt95 set, but, because of the additional utilities added with the rev.98 version, it no longer fits. It is on the WSD1 backup CD, and will be on a future version of what is currently the Summer 98 Routines disk. Look for a revised Tech Routines disk, including Quick Lock, in early '99.
