20000302: Proxy Settings for Secure HTTP
March/2000
|
This note has been updated! See September/2000, Tech Note #3. For the latest information regarding WSD1IP, please see the WSD1 information document posted at the shop ftp site. Current automated client proxy settings disable proxy for the secure hypertext transfer protocol (https). This will be changed in the next release of WSD1IP. In the meantime, for schools where this is an issue (in particular, for systems which are making use of the new web-based report card system), there are three options for working around this. Option 1: use Netscape 4. Netscape 4.x will hold proxy settings which are changed after WSD1IP is installed, since those settings are stored in a text file, and that file is only updated when the computer moves to a different WSD1 network. Option 2: use a different browser (Star Office, for example). WSD1IP only affects Netscape 2-4 and MSIE 3-5. If you use a different web browser, it will not be automatically configured. Option 3: For Netscape 2 & 3, and for all Windows 9x versions of Internet Explorer, you can edit the <windows>\WSD1IP.REG file. Delete any lines that look like this: "ProxyServer"="ftp=ercps.wsd1.org:8080;http=ercps.wsd1.org:8080"or this: "HTTPS_Proxy"=""or this: "HTTPS_ProxyPort"=dword:00000000 Once deleted, those settings will no longer be overwritten at logon. As with Netscape 4 settings, the WSD1IP.REG is only overwritten when the computer is moved to a different WSD1 network. Before summer break 2000, there should be an update for WSD1IP that will fix this and a few other issues. |
