20001004: Problems Saving to 2Teacher Share in Netscape Composer

October/2000
Tech Note #4

Neil B contributes this note. Netscape Composer 4.x won't save .html files to a network drive in some situations, dependent on user access level. When you try to save a file to say t:\classdir\test.html, you get the Netscape message (with a !) "test.html can't be saved. Either the disk is full or the file is locked. Try saving on a different disk or try saving T:\classdir\test.html with a different name". This happens on any mapped drive or to any UNC path on the server. Other applications can save files to the same target locations with no problems. Saving html files to T: with FrontPage Express, or Notepad works fine.

Microsoft and Netscape products handle LAN connections in different ways. When certain policies are in place - as with LockIt95 - or where file and directory permissions are set in certain restrictive fashion - as is commonly the case on Division 2Student and 2Teacher shares - Microsoft and Netscape web applications tend to behave differently. For example, in the March/1998 Tech Notes #2, it was noted that links in html documents on shared network drives did not work correctly for locked users in Internet Explorer, but worked fine in Netscape.

In this scenario, it is the Netscape product which has a problem accessing the network share. To work around this problem, you can either have the students save their work on the local hard drive in c:\students\webfiles and then use NetCopy to transfer their files to the desired target location, or you can use the "Edit HTML Source" function within Netscape Composer to actually do the file saving. This function calls a separate application of your choosing, typically Arachnophilia or Notepad, and that application will be able to save to the network drive.
