20001102: Publisher 98 Printing to HP LaserJet 4Si
November/2000

Last month, in the Tech Note "Hewlett-Packard 1100 Printing Slow in MS Works", the "use raster graphics" setting was discussed as a fix for a very specific printing problem involving Microsoft Works and the HP 1100 printer. This month, Neil B submits the same solution for a different problem. Technicians should consider this raster graphics setting when troubleshooting any print problems involving HP LaserJet printers. When you print MS Pub98 files to the HP LaserJet 4Si the printed page may be missing part or most of the lower part of the document. Upgrading the printer's RAM to 12MB did not help, but the following method fixed the problem for Neil B: a. Open the Publisher file. b. Click on FILE>PRINT c. Printer Name should be HP LaserJet 4Si. If not, use the list drop-down arrow and select it. d. Click on PROPERTIES (beside the printer name). e. Click GRAPHICS tab. f. In the Graphics mode section at bottom, select USE RASTER GRAPHICS. If it is already selected, leave it. g. Click OK. h. Click OK again and the document will print. i. SAVE the document. This will set the document's printer options for the next time it is opened. j. In Printer Control Panel set the HP4Si to use Raster Graphics instead of Vector. Now NEW Pub98 docs should "inherit" the new settings and the truncated page problem should go away. It seems any Pub98 doc that was saved with the original default setting (Vector graphics) for the HP4Si will use that setting again when opened, unless saved with the new graphics setting as in (i) above. This seems to happen even if the printer is set in Printer Control Panel to print using Raster Graphics. Also, remember to set the printer properties in Printer Control Panel for the ACTUAL amount of RAM it has! |
