20001205: Disabling Ctrl-Alt-Delete

December/2000
Tech Note #5

As noted in the September/2000 Tech Note #4 "LockIt95 2000 Update", the latest revision of LockIt95 includes improvements to the code which I believe may have caused the mysterious deletion of numerous system files when a user used Ctrl-Alt-Del to access the task list and end the Kix32 task. I certainly have had no reports of this problem recurring with the updated version.

However, for technicians who want to be extra sure, and/or for those who just wish users didn't have access to the task list in Windows 9x, Louis B has written a utility called WSD1KEY. It is included on the WSD1 Backup CDs Issue 17 in the \tech\wsd1key folder and is also available for download from the shop ftp site. Once installed, this program will permit the user to temporarily disable the Ctrl/Alt/Del key function which normally invokes a task list of active and non-responding programs. It will also permit the installation of the disabler as a service to Windows. Windows will load the Keydisabler program on bootup and will disable the keys. At any time an authorized user may run keydisabler.exe to enable/disable or install/remove the service.
