There's only one thing worse than being sick. Getting your period. Dealing with two draining ends at the same time is not fun.

Moments with Ray:

I went to Ray's house. He never locks the door so I walked in and found him stretched out on the bed. "Is this what you do when you're not at my house? Just lie here?" I asked. "I think," he said. "In what language?" I asked. He gave me this look like I had just suggested we cross the street when the lights are against us. "Thinking doesn't have a language," he said. "Thinking is like a movie."

There was a bit on CNN about Falecia Rhashad (questionable spelling) and her husband Abdul divorcing. Ray is familiar with both of them, but didn't know they were married. "That's his wife?" he said surprised. "Yeah, isn't she beautiful?" I said. "Isn't he beautiful, she's ugly."

Mary left a message saying it was important and to call her back as soon as I could. I tried but her line was busy. A bit later Fawad called me. I asked if he had heard from her. He said no but just got a message that he needed to talk to him very soon. I told him I got a similar message.

I started to worry. After a while she called. She had just found out that her mother was in the hospital with a brain tumor and surgery is scheduled for Wednesday. The doctor thinks it is benign and the possible cause of her poor sense of balance, loss of hearing in one hear and general klutziness. I asked Mary how long she has been like that and Mary said as long as she could remember. It is a slow growing tumor and hasn't killed her after 20 years so things look ok right now. Her mom called 911 after a headache went over half her face and down one arm. Mary leaves for Memphis today with at least one sister and doesn't know when she'll be back.

Soon Fawad called back. He said since he couldn't get through to Mary on the phone he just went to her house and that was where he was now. "How is she doing?" I asked. "Yeah, she seems to be ok." I heard pots and pans clattering in the background. "Well, give her a hug for me." I asked him where he was when he called me earlier and he said just about to go out for groceries but got worried and went to Mary's house. That's a good 30 mile drive. Whatta friend.

Ray didn't get me anything for Valentine's day. I have him a bar of European chocolate which he ate without really tasting. Israel doesn't have anything like Valentines he said. He told me to tell my mom that he gave me chocolate. "I'll tell her the truth if she asks." I said. I was sick and in bed when he was over and really didn't care if he gave me anything or not. He looked at me a moment and said "I'll get you something." then he left. The next day he came over and said he forgot to pick something up. He still hasn't given me anything probably hoping that I've forgotten or given up on getting anything.
