I went to the Medieval Faire in Norman today. I had planned
on being there around 10 when it opened but at 9 when I was fixing
to leave it started raining. The weather channel indicated that
it might be moving out in a few hours so I went to the gym instead.
At noon, the rain had stopped here, in Edmond and the sun
was peaking out. The drive through Oklahoma City was dry with
hit and miss sunshine. By the time I hit Moore it was raining
and got heavier as I got closer to Norman. Traffic was icky as
I came up on campus. I parked in the first lot I came to, I was
right in assuming it would be the best parking I could get. But
it was still about a 4 block walk to the Duck Pond where the
fair was at. In the rain, north wind with wet glasses and unpredictable
traffic was not a fun walk.
About half of the people had umbrellas or rain slickers. The
other half were like me, nothing but a coat. One vendor commented
that he was surprised to see the people not minding. "You
must be used to it here," he said. Didn't ask were he's
from, but assuming it was from somewhere hot and dry. A northerner
would know better than ask that question.
I walked quickly from booth to booth, ducking in even if there
was nothing in there interesting, just for a few moments shelter
from the wind and rain.
Hung out at Beth and Sue's booth, they were selling scarves,
fairy wands and Beth and Del were doing tarot readings. Then
me, Beth and Sue went around looking at clothes. I would like
to get some sort of costume for the Med/Ren fairs. They all go
as gypsies but that's not my style, too tacky, too gaudy. Pendragon
had a booth and I fell in love with a Lady's
Frockcoat. The black one fit a bit better than the maroon
one. She said she could tailor it to fit, but at $235 I'd be
saving for a while before I could get it. The doublets were beautiful
as well.
The Frockcoat still looked good with my jeans. If I already
owned a pair of knee high leather boots and white chemise, I
probably would have whipped out the plastic and bought it on
the spot.

Next weekend I go to Del's house and we start sewing on our
belly dance costumes. I mentioned to Beth is afternoon that I
have no idea what kind of fabric to buy or how much. I don't
even know what kind of top I'm wearing. To be uniform we're wearing
at least two skirts, a light one to flare out when we spin and
a heavy one to give the lighter one a bit of lift. Harem pants
optional I think. Maybe a ghawazee jacket. I have made no secret
of the fact I want a top to show off my belly. They should at
least give me that considering our style is tribal and while
the tribal dance in nice, the costume, however, isn't my style.
Very gaudy and well, gypsy, and the jewelry, oy vay, I won't
go there.
