School Projects

Beolw are possible projects that you could use at your school. Please let us know if you find them useful or if you have any other ideas.

Year 7 Energy: Drawing graphs and lines of best fit

How does wind speed vary during the day? Students have difficulty with the concept of drawing lines of best fit, using the data collected will motivate them to move away from bar charts and understand how to present data in a scientific manner.

Year 9 Energy and Electricity: Use data logging equipment in an innovative way

Gather data on wind speed variation over 24 hours and relate this to weather forecasts. This will introduce year 9 students to simple statistics, such as correlations highlighting how scientists interpret data.

Year 10 Energy: Improving collection and analysis of data skills

Collection of data to allow students to investigate how the power output of the turbine relates to wind speed. This will give the students direct experience of planning and executing a scientific investigation. The data collected can be used to give the students an appreciation of the optimum wind speed for electricity generation.

Year 10 Applioed Science Portfolio Work

Studying the wind turbine will allow theses students to complete their coursework using relevant and readily available data.

AS Physics: Analysing data and making predictions

Calculation of the number of turbines required to power school and calculation of blade dimensions for one large turbine to power school. This will allow them to understand how results can be used to extrapolate the data and make predictions.
