Cordage

"A person ought to have just enough rope
to hang themselves with"

Dogbane or Indian Hemp-NOT!I thought this was Dogbane, but it is really wild Honeysuckle.

Cut the dogbane and wait an hour for it to dry just a little bit. You do not want to let it dry thoroughly, or you will have to soak it to work it. With your thumbnail, split the bark lengthwise down the stalk of dogbane. Its okay to leave a little tag of a leaf- if you take the leaf off roughly your bark may break at that leaf node. Peel off the long strip in two halves and then make cordage right away.

One source I did read about dogbane was that it is poisonous and killed somebody who used it for a hot-dog skewer. I am not sure how accurate this info is, but be sure not to get the juice of it in your mouth if you wet the strands while cording them.

One thing about information on plants, is that you read is where some source will say; "Dogbane is good for cordage." But it doesn't tell you that you will be using the bark and throwing away the rest of the branch. The first time I went to use it, I started peeling the branch and throwing away the peel before I realized how fibrous the bark was.

My point is that you've got to get out into the outdoors and experience some of these things.

A good website on how to make cordage.
