If you find yourself stuck in the wilderness without a weapon, find or cut a straight staff about 5½ feet long, and sharpen the end into a point. It should be from 1" to 2" in diameter at the base. You don't want it to be too big, because it will require energy to carry, but it should be stout enough for defense. Weapons serve a dual purpose. You use them to obtain and prepare food and to provide self-defense. A weapon can also give you a feeling of security and provide you with the ability to hunt on the move.
The staff should be a green stick, as this will be stronger than a dead branch found on the ground. Passing the point over a fire will "fire harden" it by driving the moisture out of the wood.
Thus armed, you will feel more secure, and the spear will also be a walking stick. This has its own advantages. The hole by your tracks the staff leaves is a very distinctive track for your searchers to follow. The staff also gives you a third point, or tripod for better balance in places of unsure footing. You can probe the water ahead of you at creek fordings, and you can use the staff to kill snakes and lizards.
