Mary Sheridan and John Clifford

Mary Sheridan was born in Ireland. She married John Clifford a few years before immigrating to the US. They arrived here some time around 1848. They lived at 127 West St, Rutland Vermont, near her brothers Stephen and Michael. Mary died of heart disease on August 23, 1899. The family is buried at Calvary Catholic cemetery.

Mary's obituary reads:

"Mrs. John Clifford died yesterday afternoon at her home on West Street of heart trouble. She came to Rutland with her husband from Ireland about 40 years ago and lived here until her death. Her husband died about six years ago. Mrs. Clifford was mother of 14 children, 13 of whom are still living. Seven sons who survive her are: John P. Clifford, policeman; William H. Clifford of Saratoga NY, Delaware and Hudson conductor; M J. Clifford of the firm of Duffy and Clifford; T.A. Clifford of the firm Cleavelend and Clifford; S.C. Clifford, undertaker; C J. Clifford proprietor of the Bomoseen house, Castleton, and Lawrence Clifford of this city. Six daughters who survive Mrs. Clifford are: Miss B.M.Clifford, organist of St. Peter's church; Mrs. John Roche of Bellows Falls, Mrs. John Ford of Poultney, Miss Maggie Clifford, organist of the Catholic Church of Whitehall NY, Miss Elizabeth and Miss Agnes Clifford of West Street in this city. The funeral will be held at St. Peter's Church Friday morning at 9 o'clock."

Duffy & Clifford was a business owned by Michael Clifford. The store sold groceries, meat, cigars, tobacco, crockery, boots, shoes, coal, wood, etc. and was located at 14 Evelyn Street, Rutland.

John and Mary had the following children:

  1. Bridget Clifford - b. 1847 Ireland. Never married. Was witness to Anora's marriage to Matthew Fox. She died 1936. Was an organist at St. Peter's Church in Rutland.
  2. John Clifford - 1849-1927 Married Ellen Farrell
  3. Patrick Clifford - died age 4
  4. Ann Clifford - b. 1852 Married 1st Maurice Downey. Married 2nd John Roach. Worked as a clerk at Sterns & Co.
  5. William Clifford - b. 1853 Married Mary Farrell
  6. Michael Clifford - b. 1857. Worked at Duffy & Clifford.
  7. Mary Clifford - b. Feb 5, 1858 died shortly after
  8. Mary Clifford - b. Feb 18, 1859 Married John Flood
  9. Timothy Clifford - born Nov 2, 1860. Married Mary O'Brien on Sep 2, 1890 in Rutland. The witnesses for the Marriage at St. Peter's Church were Charles Clifford and Ellen O'Brien.  He was buried in 1908 in Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
  10. Stephen Clifford - b. 1864 - Married Jennie Farrell. He was a dealer in coffins, caskets and metalic cases. Business address 10 Evelyn St.
  11. Maggie Clifford - b. 1866 - Married John Lalor. Was an organist and a music teacher.
  12. Charles Clifford - b. 1867 - Married Etta Conlon. Worked as a clerk at Bardwell House.
  13. Lawrence Clifford - b. Dec 1869 - Never married. Worked as a clerk at Duffy & Clifford.
  14. Lizzie Clifford - b. ? - Never married
  15. Agnes Clifford - b. ? - Never married
