What's New?

January, 2005
I've neglected this site for so long! Sorry! Well, we still have the same cute squirrels at our place, but I've been so busy lately that I haven't been keeping up with them. Other news, we had an opossum climb up our outside stairs to the third floor porch and he just sat there for hours! He wasn't in the least scared of us, and despite what you may think, he was extremely cute! We named him Geoffrey (after my favorite actor, Geoffery Palmer). Alas, he hasn't been back since...
(I will put a picture of Geoffery here when I get it off the camera!)

We've got a new, friendly squirrel in our backyard and I named her Juniper (Junie for short). She's very bold and dashes right over when I call to her. There is also a family of squirrels living in the vacant house next door. The babies like to play and chase each other across the roof. How cute! And sadly, I haven't seen Lefty in a while, but I'm sure she's around somewhere.

Markus and I visited my parents for the holidays, and I was so happy to see many of my old squirrel friends still hanging around the backyard, and a few new babies, too! To the right is Hermione, begging for peanuts while I was eating lunch.

Well, it's official, we actually have a one-eared squirrel at our house. Her name is Lefty (ha ha) and what a cute squirrel she is! (I'll try to take her picture sometime). She doesn't like to eat from the hanging feeder in our yard (she visits very rarely), so on my way to work I usually throw her some peanuts. She's become quite tame and runs right over when I call her. Jerome Richie, another one of my squirrel friends, is my most frequent feeder guest. She's still a little shy around me, but I'm hoping with time she'll take a peanut from my hand.

My parents took a trip down south, and on their way back they stopped in Olney, IL to see the famous white squirrels. In Olney, it is illegal to run over a squirrel with your car, and if you do, be ready to pay a heafty fine!! This white squirrel colony is Olney's claim to fame, and even the police wear patches on their uniforms bearing a white squirrel!

We finally moved to our new house, and unfortunately couldn't take the squirrels with us. But never fear, there are squirrels everywhere! I made a new milk jug feeder and hung it from our back fence. It took an entire week for the squirrels to find the food, but now they come around all the time.

I bought some bushy tail trail mix made of bird seed, almonds, peanuts, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, corn and raisins. It took a day or two for my furry friends to get used to it, but now they eat it readily, and even bypass peanuts for it! I also put out a water dish which the squirrels use frequently to quench their thirst. Today, however, was a scorching 101 degrees, and a baby squirrel cooled himself off by sitting right in the middle of the water dish!

I'm at home visiting my parents and the resident squirrels. Lola and Dennis are regulars, as well as Hermione. They still remember me, and come running when I call to them. Dennis has taken up a very bad habit: climbing on my parent's screen door when he wants food. My mom isn't too happy about this and sprays him with water whenever he tries his new favorite trick...

Clefty had babies! Nicole and I had the honor of seeing the new squirrel family up close! There are four cute and fuzzy babies, two with scrawny tails and two with full tails. The squirrel family lives outside the Union in a huge grey beech tree with sprawling branches, (highly suitable for a tree house I might add). In this picture, the babies are crawling all over their mother.

I made a feeder out of a plastic milk jug for the squirrels and hung it from our patio railing with Markus' old shoe laces. I wasn't sure how many squirrels it would attract, but it turns out many frequent our feeder! Their names are Tom, Jerry, Pippi, Carl, Brigit, Rosie and Wickie, to name a few. Brigit and Wickie have warmed up to me, although the others are still a bit unsure. When we move to our new house, I'd like to construct a more attractive feeder out of wood.

Here I am again, back in Urbana, IL. The squirrels here on the U of I campus are really friendly. They eat handouts all the time and never think twice about climbing your leg in search of food. The squirrel population at the university is made up of grey squirrels. I try to feed them as often as possible, (even though sometimes they would rather lick the lid of a plastic cup for the remains of a soda than take a peanut from me). Here's a list of squirrel names so far: Pumuckl, Buster, Clefty, Meanie, Tiger, Yolanda, Shorty, Peaches, Templeton, and Little Blue Bear.
Thanks Nicole!
I want to thank my friend Nicole for helping me name the squirrels and for always (and I mean always!) taking time out from studying to feed them with me. What a pal!
