Q: Do tree squirrels hibernate?
A: No, tree squirrels are active throughout the year. They become less active during very cold months. |
Q: Do tree squirrels sleep in trees or do they burrow underground?
A: Although many species of squirrels make dens underground, tree squirrels are safest in trees. They make leafy nests called "dreys", sleep in hollowed out trees, and may also take up residence in squirrel boxes or houses. |
Q: I've been having problems with squirrels raiding my birdfeeder, eating all the birdseed and scaring all the birds away. What can I do about this?
A: The answer is simple: if you want the squirrels to leave your birdfeeder alone, you need to set up a squirrel feeder just for them, located far enough away from your birdfeeder and with easy squirrel access. Then your birds can feast in peace and everyone's happy, including the squirrels! |
Q: I enjoy feeding squirrels, but all I've been feeding them are peanuts. What other foods do they like?
A: Squirrels will eat just about anything! A diet that consists only of peanuts can be unhealthy, so I suggest feeding them dried corn on the cob, apple slices, birdseed, and/or other types of nuts. Just make sure not to feed them food meant for humans such as potato chips, cookies, etc. |
Q: There is a squirrel in my yard with big bald patches on his back. Is he sick?
A: Chances are your squirrel is molting or has contracted the mange. The mange is a disease caused primarily by parasitic mites that burrow into the skin. The squirrel will loose hair in the affected area, leaving it with many bald spots. Mites cause squirrels to constantly scratch which produces intense irritation of the skin. |
Q: Is there any way I can treat a squirrel affected with the mange?
A: The only way to ensure a complete recovery is to trap the squirrel and take him to a wildlife center. If trapping the squirrel is not an option, I suggest feeding it something which helps to boost the immune system. Mix together peanut butter, brewer's yeast and flax seed oil, and spread it onto a piece of bread. Cut the bread into small pieces and feed it to the sick squirrels. I have done this for a few of my squirrels, and they are now furry and healthy again. |
Q: I was recently bitten by a squirrel. Am I in danger of getting rabies?
A: It is possible but extremely rare. Humans bitten by squirrels with rabies may experience mild, localized infections such as tetanus. As with any animal bite, however, make sure to wash the affected area with soap and water, and contact your physician if any serious symptoms occur. |
Q: I heard you are a member of "The Squirrel Lover's Club". Where can I get more information about joining?
A: "The Squirrel Lover's Club" web site has all the information you will need to join. The address is: www.thesquirrelloversclub.com/ |
