Squirrel Story

The Squirrel Story

So here's the story. What started out as an innocent peanut feeding to one or two squirrels turned out to be an everyday occurance. We had at one time 17 squirrels at our back door, not to mention crows and the occasional blue jay. I bought peanuts and corn for my squirrel friends and built them a nice wooden house and feeder. They are such interesting animals to watch, and they each have very unique personalities.

Two years ago I moved to Urbana, Il, and have made new squirrel friends here on campus and at home. The campus squirrels are the most fun to feed because they are so bold and friendly. I constructed a milk carton feeder for my backyard squirrels, and they eat from it often, although they are more wary of humans than the ones on the campus Quad. I feed them roasted unsalted peanuts from the grocery store, and sometimes make my special special peanut butter ball treats which they enjoy very much. (If you are interested in the recipe, please let me know and I'll gladly send it to you!)
