i saw powderfinger
at club nova, newcastle, last night. it was the first show
on their australian tour.
my sister and i planned on
getting to club nova at about 8.30pm, as the doors opened at 8pm
and we thought this would still give us plenty of time to get a
good spot up the front to see something
for kate. how wrong we were.
we arrived at club nova at 8.15pm
to find a massive line of 1000's of bogans and tarted up girls
(with a few reasonably alternative looking types in
between) lining up around the block to get in. SHIT.
while waiting i decided to text
message vic to kill a little time and to complain about how
mainstream powderfinger have become and how much they suck. it
was then that one of the bogans in front of me interupted...
guy: damn i should have brought my phone with me too. hey, i have friends who won't be able to find
me in the line, if i give you $1 can i quickly use your phone?
me: *smartly* sure, if you can wait a minute for me to finish writing this text
message *smiles obnoxiously*
guy: actually, i have $2, i will give you $2 *smiles* *after about 40
seconds, smartly* geeez, are you writing an essay there?
me: *snidely* maybe. hehehe. look matey just hang on a moment would you? ` patience is a virtue, you know?
guy's mates: bwhahaha she put you in your place!!
guy: ooh we have a feisty one!
me: hands over phone
guy: *talks to his mate* so what's england like this time of year? *pause* ooooh! you're in india now!!
haha. yes ladies
and gentleman, i think we have a comedian on our hands.
so, after the
bogan and his bogan mates amused me for about another half an
hour, we finally found ourselves inside club nova. it was then
that i noticed i could hear paul dempsey's sublime voice
drifting from above. "it's a little late for a
sound check" i thought to myself. it wasn't until
we made our way upstairs that i realised sfk were actually on
stage! eeeek!! i grabbed my sister and ran down to
the front of the massive crowd. somehow i managed
to push my way into the third row in front of steph the bass
player. i asked the girl how beside me how long they had
been playing for and she said that they had been on for half an
hour!! and it was only 8.55pm by this time!! i was
devastated!! but at least i got to hear half their set,
including the song you only hide, which i think is still
my favourite song from the new album, echolalia, oh and say
something, a song which always makes me want to clap my
hands.
soon after sfk
left the stage and the roadie's came out to set up
powderfinger's gear. there were an absolute tonne of
lights, which built me up to expect a massive light show, so i
was kind of disappointed when the band came out and the lights
were nothing special. the projected backdrop was not even
used until the third song of the set! and it was rather
lame.
but they played
WOBBLY KNEE!!!! which made the $50 i paid for my
ticket worth the price. i love that song! it
is an awesome b-side from the pick you up single.
they also did a cover of bowie's ziggy stardust and
played boing boing. sadly there was no freedom.
i had heard a rumour that they may playa it and was finally
compelled to yell "play freedom! you know you
want to!!" to which dz looked at me and spoke "freedom?
is that a request? hmm we will have to think about that
one." to which i got many strange looks from the people
surrounding.
so the guys played
pretty much what seemed like all the songs of odyssey number
five, except for maybe one or two tracks, three songs from
internationalist, four from double allergic, plus the b-side and
the cover i mentioned earlier. nope no parables songs at all.
and i am beginning
to believe these rumours about bern being a junkie.
apparently there is word around brisbane that he is on heroin,
and i gotta say he is looking kinda crap now. and this
long sleave shirt business is rather suspicious. last night he
had on a long sleave shirt even though the rest of the band were
all wearing short sleaves. i also hear he has not been
seen in anything but a long sleave shirt for quite a while now.
if anyone sees him wearing anything but a long sleave shirt on
this tour, email me.
it took me until
the final song of the encore to figure out who it is that bern
is looking like now - it's the lead guy from the bee
gee's!! seriously! *yuck*
i also have a
rather cute baby blue slash neck
powdy top now, too. the brown
tour shirts were just ugly, and the black
ones were boring.
the crowd last
night was also rather good, considering the high number of
bogans. i was in the second row between bern and dz and
only copped two people to the head all night. top
stuff. much unlike the last time i saw powderfinger in
newcastle (at uni) where i had to spend the entire night dodging
bodies as i was squished against the barrier.
so HAVE FUN to
everyone who is seeing powdy on this tour! just make sure
you get to the gig EARLY so you don't miss any sfk action like i
did!
powderfinger
setlist:
double allergic
tracks: pick you up, daf (with part of neil young's tonight's the night), living type, boing boing
internationalist
tracks: the day you come, don't wanna be left out, passenger
odyssey number
5 tracks: waiting for the sun, my happiness, the metre, like
a dog, up & down & back again, my kind of scene, these
days, thrilloilogy, whatever makes you happy
other songs:
wobbly knee (pick you up b-side), ziggy stardust (david bowie
cover)
on a completely
different note, guess who i saw for the first time since that
night. we stopped and gave each other a hug and had a chat
about powdy, him going to chicago on saturday, his decision to
attempt to sneak in to see john
butler trio tomorrow night, me not wanting to do industrial
experience these holidays and the fact he can't see george
on saturday night. lucky vic wasn't with me or she would
have kicked his arse. teeheehee.
