The Casson-Spurlock Conundrum and Other Mysteries

This page contains information on our family "mysteries" Our hope is that any who read it, who have pieces of our family puzzle, will be willing to step forward and share with us.

Laura Louise Wilber

Laura (b 1880 Citra, Marion County, Florida) was the daughter of Volney Thomas Wilber (b Dec 1856 Ohio) and his wife, Isabella Eugenia Burleson (b 1854 Citra). Isabella's parents: Daniel Allison Burleson and Elizabeth Mary Dawson.

Following her mother's death when Laura was about two years old, she lived in Caroline County, Virginia with her unmarried aunt, Corah J. Wilber (b 1853 Ohio) and cousin, Hattie Cady (b 1859 Ohio). Laura's son, Rudolph Spurlock Casson (b 4 Mar 1901 Caroline County, VA) later married Easter Belle Tarvin in Campbell County, Kentucky.

The Puzzle

Rudolph's father, John Spurlock. We have no documentation on him from Caroline County and little from Hamilton County, Ohio where Laura moved with her family ca 1905. We have no marriage record for Laura Louise Wilber and John Spurlock.

Volney Thomas Wilber

Volney was found in the 1880 Marion County, Florida census and the 1900 Hamilton County, Ohio census. In Florida his mother was listed as "Sue Wilber" (b ca 1825 Ohio). From that same census we know Volney's father was born in New York State. Enumerated with Volney n the 1900 census was Elmer Wilber (b Jan 1878) who was listed as Volney's son.

The Puzzle

What was Sue's maiden name? Where in Ohio was she born? And Volney? Was Elmer really Volney's son and who was his mother? When and where did Volney die? What about Volney's father?

Joseph Marion McCandless

Joseph (b 1817 Tennessee) appeared in the 1837 Warren County, Mississippi State census. He married Nancy ?Webster?, believed to be the sister of Jacob Webster of Oakridge, Warren County, MS but this is unproven.

The Puzzle

When and where did Joseph and Nancy marry? Is Nancy's maiden name really Webster? Were Joseph and Nancy from Marshall County, MS?

William Harrison McCandless

Son of Joseph Marion McCandless, William was last seen in the 1880 Warren County, MS census. He married Sarah J. Burke in Warren Co., MS in Dec 1870.

The Puzzle

What became of William and Sarah and their children? Did they remain in Mississippi or move elsewhere?
