Letter to the Editor
"My son, Patrick, was one of the lucky students asked to participate in the "Chance of a Lifetime: Kids, teachers take part in "boot camp" at Parris Island" (Thursday, July 20, 2000 Forsyth County News). Gail Richardson's delightful and informative article echoes my son's impressions from the trip.
Even more than this wonderful trip, my son's experience in the Forsyth County Schools' Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (MCJROTC) has been a formative and rewarding experience for him. Patrick has been "bussed" to North Forsyth High School these past two years so that he could participate in the program. Major Mac Kelly and Gunnery Sergeant Jack Snook are two men that Patrick genuinely admires. Under their guidance we have seen him grow in self-confidence while he learned leadership skills, grew in citizenship by participating in community events and benefited physically from the MCJROTC fitness program.
Parents take note. My family and I heartily recommend MCJROTC for all of Forsyth County's young men and women. I would be happy to speak with any parent who has questions about my son's participation and Patrick, too, will discuss ROTC and the Marine Corps with interested students."
