Teeth care

I do not separate between coat and general care because
I realized that beauty comes from within. I learn from
experienced show breeders , vets, books, internet and,
most of all, my mistakes. No one can heal a dog except his owner.
These are some conclusions (which may be changed from time
to time when I learn more) I would like to share with others:

1. Vaccine:

Some vaccines cause serious side effects. Be careful
to give only what is necessary. Give them separate shot
for each type of vaccine or as less combination as possible.
Neither Hexa norTetra combine should be used
even in adult. Small dogs may die.

2. Food :

High quality food, commercial or home made.
Regularly feed at the same time and ignore if they do not eat.
Starvation stimulates appetite and even heals some sicknesses.
I feed natural raw food and raw meaty bones.
This food makes my tiniest girl grow and cleans the teeth.
Giving them some table scraps is family happy time.
Here is my recipe:
Chopped or grinded raw chicken meat 4 cups
Grounded raw chicken bones mixed with liver 1 cup
Chopped mixed vegetables 1 cup
Vegetable oil 2-3 tablespoons
Children multivitamin syrup 5-10 cc.
Cod liver oil 1-2 teaspoons
Lecithin 2 capsules
This makes one-day meal for my 3 yorkies, 3 westies , 1 cocker.
I feed them once in the evening. In the morning ,
cucumbers or pork bones or dried small fish alternately.

 3. Bath :

Only complete nutrition can heal dry coat. Bath them with
non oil, non silicone, show quality shampoo and conditioner.
Rinse thoroughly after both  shampoo and conditioner.
Leave some conditioner on the coat but not on the skin.
Blow dry with low temperature. Hot blow will damage the hair.
Oil, silicone or other polishing materials temporary help
for better looking only. When these products are used for
show coat, the dog should be washed after show.
In my weather ( hot and damp), too much oil is dangerous to skin.
Besides, too much washing is dangerous too. Stop oil
and you can delay the bath. I found 2 weeks interval
between each bath is better than one week.
They have enough time to produce their own natural oil
to protect their skins. Spray water on the coat , towel dry
and brush or cool blow dry can help their coat stay clean.
The ears are cleaned by shampooing and watering thoroughly.
After bath, I use cotton buds to swab ear canals ( gently).
I wrap the coat with thin paper and open electric fan for them all day.

4. Parasite:

No monthly (or any regular interval ) application of any drug
( flea-tick spot on, heartworm drug, antiparasite). These drugs
cause discoloration and dry coat, skin rash and even injure their livers.
Treat them only when blood test or stool exam show infection.
I use neem oil on the dog and neem solution on the ground for
tick and flea problem. Not highly effective (flea out, tick stay but
slowly mature and fade away) but non-toxic.
Recently there is a new non-toxic water-spray
pesticide I think may works better.

5. Accident
:

Beware of high jump, playing with bigger dog, outdoor walk,
fighting with other puppies. They may lose teeth, break bone,
get injured or even die easily. Hot weather is harmful too.
Look after them just like you look after your own baby.

6. Training:

I am not a successful trainer. But this is what I learn from
my dogs. Training will fail if the dog is spoiled.
Keep them in cage at night. Do not hold them up so frequently.
Housebreaking must be trained first.
Train yourself to let them out regularly especially
early in the morning and after meal.
Some dogs need to go before dinner.Play with them while
training. Make training interesting for them. Bait with the most
delicious treats.Once you lose your temper, stop training.
Do not punish them. Be very patient. It takes time and
you will be the most patient person in the world when
you finish training yorkies. Yorkies are smart.
If you give the treats to them too early or too frequently,
they will not
concentrate on the procedure. They will stop
occasionally when they think it's time for treats. The
appropriate way is to finish each procedure before
give them the treats. Yorkies need regular training
more than other breeds because they are usually spoiled.
Leash training should be very loose at first.
No pulling is recommended until you are sure that they
know the signal. You may end up with pulling the dog
around in the show ring everytime you show him.
Let pulling be only short signal to remind him the procedure.
If you pull the leash with young dog, the trachea can be
traumatised and the dog willhave collapsed trachea.
You will hear him cough often.
I use very thin leash. It works well for my dogs.

7. Teeth care :

Since they prone to death during anesthesia, I try
to scrape their teeth by myself. Madame Cousin
does it best. She showed me how to do but I
could not train my dogs like she did. Besides scraping,
I tried raw meaty bones. I found that too big or
too small piece won't work. The bone must be appropriate
to the jaw. Body part of pork spine ( chop off the
spinous process) works very well and I don't have to
fight with my dogs any more. I give them about 2-3 times
a week. The bone can be given raw or put in boiled water
for a few minutes with fire off ( not fully cooked).
I must keep them under supervision (in cage) while they
eating their bones and take the uneaten bone away
after they finish ( about 1 hour). Be careful that
the wraps must be in place befo
re the bone come
or the dogs may lose their mustach.
