The most famous person in my hometown is diplomat named He Fengshan. He was the diplomat of Chinese embassy in Austria from 1937 to 1940. During the World War 2, he saved thousands of Jews. Germany annexed Austria in March 1938. Nazis wanted to kill Jews in Austria or force them leave. If Jews want to leave, they had to have the visa of the country that they want to go. To Jews, left Austria meant survived. However, a lot of countries refused to give Jews visa because they were afraid of Nazi Germany. At this time, He Fengshan decided to help Jews, he began to grant all the JewsĄŻ applications. Nobody knows exactly how many people He Fengshan had saved, even himself. People tried to account the number of people he had saved. What they knew is form May to October 1938, he had put out more than 1900 visas. Some information form some other book said that have more than 4000 Jews went to Palestine by holding Chinese visas. He Fengshan died in 1997 when he was 97 years old. He is a great hero, I am very proud of he is form my hometown.
