My professional interest is in exploring effective ways to teach Japanese and English as
foreign languages, including the application of ICT in language teaching and learning. After graduating in French studies (BA) and American and English studies (Diploma) from Kyoto University of Foreign Studies, I taught English in secondary schools in Tokyo and Kochi for nineteen years. During this time I completed an MA in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) at the Institute of Education, University of London. My report title was "Devising materials to teach grammar to false beginners in Japanese secondary schools". Based on this study and teaching experience, I published the communicative grammar books for Japanese learners of English in 1999. In higher education level as part-time, I have taught English in the open lecture classes at Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Technology. I have also taught Japanese at the external division of SOAS, University of London. Since 1999, I have been a part-time lecturer in the Japanese teacher training course at the International Institute of Education in London. This experience in teaching English and Japanese as foreign languages both in secondary schools and higher educations have further provoked my interest in application of ICT in language teaching. I recently received an MA in Information and Communications Technology in Education from the Institute of Education, University of London. My recent study concerns the use of computer-mediated communication (CMC) in teaching spoken English to Japanese learners using voice file attachments and transcripts. I have been developing the web-based instruction site: Introduction to CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) for Japanese teachers. It is designed to familiarize Japanese teachers with development in CALL and to help them to use it to improve their teaching. The site will give access to demonstrations of a range of techniques that can be used in daily lessons.
