The Fighting Temeraire! James M. W. Turner (1775-1851) gave us this brilliant tribute to a ship that will always be remembered in Great Britain. The Temeraire was second in command at Trafalgar, and, her crew avenged the death of Lord Nelson in that battle in 1805. Now 33 years later she is being towed to the salvage docks to be broken up. The picture is rife with symbolism- the sunset of her career, being towed by a steam tugboat- ushering in the new age of steam power, but, notice the rocket to the left, rising as a final salute to the grand old warrior!
