![]() Sketch of our Route |
We, the Shepards, had both visited the cities of Eastern Europe in the early 90s. Burely had also cycled in the Czech Republic at that time. The small towns were very depressing: shops were boarded up and there was a sense of hopelessness. He was particularly interested to see what changes had come about in the first ten years of democracy in that part of the world. We were delighted to find vibrant and renewed communities everywhere we went. We had also cycled down the Danube, on the north bank, with our friends, Greg Bannister and his wife Vicky, just after we were married in 1995. They were on a tandem and we were still on single bikes. We were impressed with their tandem and with their obvious enjoyment of their mode of transport. Now we were on our own tandem and on our own. The cycle path along the Danube was better developed and this time we chose to cycle moslty on the South bank.
