Memorial to Tanya Burr, killed 15 September 2002

The English segment of Tanya's trip - 22 August 2002

Tanya's Diary - Thursday, 22 August 2002

"Said goodbye to everyone this morning and caught my flight at mid-day to London.

Got there and waited three hours for Aunty Pam and Dennis. Then their friend Caroline came to pick us up, the beginning of a long journey on the M25

That night we drank wine, had a curry for dinner which made me crook. I didn't say anything so as not to be rude."

A last look at the local landmark - the crane across the road. (Photo: Pam, with the Norway date on her camera actually coinciding with NZ time for a change)

Norway's grain fields and forests from above, when en route to England. Pam took this photo, but Tanya had made the same journey a couple of hours earlier. The reason for travelling on separate planes was because Pam and Denis had flown Air NZ and we had flown Qantas. Thus each was tied to a different airline for the Norway-UK leg - or else had to pay heaps more.

Farvel to the land of trolls and endless pretty road-signs decorated with trotting mooses! Of course, the road-signs are really there in the hope that the Norwegian's cars won't end up decorated by the mooses. Perhaps there might also be road-signs decorated by cars to remind the mooses - or maybe boundary fences of deer netting adjoining the roads might help too. Well that trick works in NZ - although the average rather large moose ("elgen") might take a bit of fencing in even then!

I have no idea was the plural of 'moose' is. Evidently they are also called elk, and in New Zealand at least - Wapiti. No doubt Russell-the-hunter will eventually read this page and clarify the matter...
