Memorial to Tanya Burr, killed 15 September 2002

Anita's photos

Anita (3rd from left in top photo) and Tanya met when Anita started at Whakarongo School, Palmerston North, in 1994. Both were in Form Two, with Tanya having attended the school since she was five. They remained best mates and confidants for the rest of Tanya's life. Anita is the last 'friendly' person known to have spoken to Tanya during her lifetime (many have 'spoken' to her since), as she phoned Tanya about about 6:30pm on the night she was killed. Naturally she was fine then, however, it seems she had less than two hours to live. Tanya had explained that she was very tired through jet-lag, but was going to watch some TV for a while and then turn in for the night. One of her favourite movies - 'Austin Powers' (Mk I) - was on TV that night, and Anita thinks she was probably watching that.

Anita, her brother James, and their partners, had welcomed Tanya home to Rotorua with a special dinner at James' flat on Saturday, 14 September. In all she spent about four hours with Tanya that night looking at photos, new clothes, chatting and planning for the future as Tanya was to go with Anita to apply for a new job on Monday morning, 16 September. However, when Anita phoned on the Monday morning to finalise arrangements, the police answered Tanya's phone......

In 1997, when Tanya was going through her rebellious phase (with Mum and high school anyway) and lived with Anita's family in Dannevirke for a few months during which time she attended Dannevirke High School.

The above is a 'ring-in' from Tanya's album from 1997. Ye Gods!
