Do Androids Dream of
Electric Sheep? Also printed as "Blade Runner".
|
- Off-world
colonists need companions and stellar expansion of the human race
needs superior labor and warriors. Earthlings need pets and dial up
moods. Replicants (specially engineered humanoids) help fill the void.
Then they run amok, seeking the same questions humans ask. Film Noir
at its best : even when it came out as a movie. Very interesting
characters and Futuristic view of human society.

Confessions of a Crap Artist
|
- Not quite
Sci-Fi: but an excellent drama about a well-to-do businessman and his
wife in Califiornia. The tension is great. Fantastic bored housewife
in stereotypical challenges of marriage to successful but remote
husband: this one should be made into a movie.

VALIS
|
- Here Philp
develops and grows his craft and views of world events, GOD and
meaning. More than technology, the Vast Active Living Inteligence
System reach out to guide man.

The Divine Invasion
|
- Here GOD
comes reincarnate in the form of vulnerable children. The human
condition and ultimate decisions of life. Very challenging to read,
but investigates human faith in a higher power.

The Transmigration of Timothy Archer
|
- POW!
More challenging character development. Much more mature read.
Quality level of character development and interplay between them
similar to 'Confessions' above. Exploring human frailty:
tangentially similar to 'Thornbirds'.

Galactic Pot-Healer
|
- Pottery and
Supreme beings: a lark of a story. PKD is only tangentially work up to
discussing theological issues here. I remember this was the novel
where I started: I noticed later that a lot of his lead male
characters get whisked away or thrown into events quite beyond their
control : no self-determination. Victim of circumstances or their own
dysfunction. It suggested to me a fairly pessimistic view of the human
condition.

The Game-Players of Titan
|
- Third or
Fourth book I read. Slime-molds rule! Reminiscent of Original Star
Trek episode: Game Players of Triskelon where "supreme
beings" in glass jars bet on the outcome of Enterprise crew
hand-to-hand combat with Drill Thralls.

The Man in the High Castle
|
- Explores
alternate outcome of WWII in which NAZI and Japanese win and divide
United States. Very interesting development of theme and characters.
Has the potential for a great movie. PKD won the Hugo Award for it.

Clans
of the Alphane Moon
|
- Click the
link to the left:. All the Psionic talent you ever wanted (all having
some kind of Psychological Disorder), create a new world. They and the
Alpha aliens create great distress for Earth. Simulacra developed in
this work. Also one of the Dick's best big brother watching younger
big brother efforts.

- Great Sci-Fi, several
revisited themes in PKD work are alive here.

in super paranoid mode. Good characters that might make a
good movie for Saturday afternoon.

Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said
|
- WHAT A
ROLLERCOASTER! I loved this novel. I began to see PKD's
patterns very well in this story. Poor Mr. Taverner! PKD won the
Campbell Memorial Award for this tale. One of my favorites: reality
twisted, characters twisting. Imaginative symbolism, well developed,
and social commentary that still speaks to current events. This should
be made into a movie or theatre production.

Ubik
|
- I read this 8/8/00. It has
funny chapter opening ad's for different products named 'UBIK'. Stock
up on your UBIK: use only as directed. Great commentary on the human
need to overcome superficial qualities.

The Man Who Japed
|
- I read this in the original
pulp paperpack! The story was a great dystopia set in a autocratic
state!! Has a 'Hollywood' ending but is quite engaging. Freedom of the
individual theme, rebelling against big brother. Similar to other PKD
works. It prompted me to revisit other authors and collect their
works in paperback.

The Cosmic Puppets
|
Short and to the point! A
mainly earth-bound story about the manifestations of the opposing
forces (good vs. evil). Really clean read. Somehow it reminded me of
Salem's Lot or some similar story.

The World Jones Made
|
A grandiose, world
domination tale that backfires on more than a few souls: Philp visits
the paranoia associated with Psionic talent (limited future
vision)here as well as his fascination with funky dysfunctional
chicks! Get Fucky, YEah!

We Can Build You
|
Simulacra for
sale! Cheap too! Great business intrigue, with conflicting agendas and
gadget builders: the tech-folk evolution reminds me of the last 50
years of real world business transitions. Having lived in the
Northwest US myself, travelling in the areas Philp describes had some
impact on my enjoyment. Probably would be good for me to visit S.
California and Berkeley too, considering his other work storys are set
there. The thing that I noticed was that Dick's simulacra are
"more human than human". That is, they differ significantly
from more stereotypical robots or androids. This makes for unique and
enjoyable reading. Yet some of his characters are more like
predictable machines... food for thought.

Finished 08/2006 - excellent and quickly read. Another grand tour of world run by a single dogma and entity. Computers battling computers; men battling men; computers using men; men battling computers. Okay, so that is a bit simplistic. It is another great dystopian Earth-based tale.
