Hi Sue, Wish you and everyone a Happy New Year for '02, coming up to my fourth year of being an exile.,but I'm still happy with my "Colonial".

Had a quiet Christmas, enjoyed catching up with the guestbook etc., Note to anyone in L.A., there is a stall in the Farmer's Market, near CBS, THAT DOES REAL HOME MADE STEAK N KID PIES. We were out there last April, and stopped there for lunch, and I found the Pieman.OH HOW THAT TASTED. They were so good I took two back to our hotel, and if I could have, I would have brought som back here too. Unfortunately, the kid serving them wasn't too clever with my Geordie American accent, but I was able to get by. First pies [not made by Lois] I've had here in four years, but I still miss Milligans Pasties.

Roll on July...then back to UK to replenish the old pie, peas, pasties, curry chips taste buds....

Love to all

Jimbo

Hi everyone! Left UK almost 20 years ago now to work on cruise ship and settled here in USA. Would like to contact any old friends from the area. Anyone remember Millie Wright from Elmwood Grove near the Spanish City or the Spencers that had a cafe on the seafront or how about The Crescendo Club !!!!! Wow we're going way back here . . .

Hi Sue...and everyone: I was looking around your site to see how you were doing - it's coming on! I see you got my little story in there, it was written for mostly American readers, but it might strike a cord with some folks "back home". I'd be pleased to hear from anyone who might have lived in or around Ryton in those times. I hope no one took offence at my critical, if somewhat tongue-in-cheek, view of my school :-)) Drew & Pat Irving.

I'm on a mission !! Well let's just say I've introduced corned beef and potato pie to some of the Americans who can't see past burgers !! I do miss pease pudding and stottie cake but not the cold north east weather. Hello to anyone who knows me!

Great site. I wondered if any other ex-pats had visited the friends reunited website at www.friendsreunited.co.uk which is a great way to get in touch with old school friends in the U.K. Apparently there are over 40,000 secondary and primary schools on this site. Hope the British winter is not too bad this year. We are having an unusually warm winter here in south western Ontario. It is a balmy 15 C today! I'm sure there is plenty of snow on the way. Thank you for a wonderful website Sue. Catherine.

Does any one have old photographs of the 'Frog Ponds' old clay pits at Boldon? If they can be copied I would meet the cost of reproduction and P&P. Met up with Gary and Mary Elmy of Mangakino, whose photo of grape fruit was in the Taste of Home recently. Great web page, Sue, waiting for the rest of it when you get time.

Hi Everyone. I guess I have been lucky and made a few contacts with old mates from Sunderland, but I am always on the lookout for new sightings, so if anyone recognises my name, please drop me a line via my Email. We moved from Millfield after the war to Pennywell. I went to Hylton Road School, and before going into the Army, worked at Silksworth Colliery.

Do you know where I could get an old map of Scotswood Road and the streets surrounding it? I brought up one on the web but all the old streets where I used to live are gone. The part I'm looking for is around Enfield Road where the old Crown Pictures and Vickers Armstrong used to be. Thanks! Esther

Sue replies:

This might be a useful site to try:
Mapworks

The company is called Godfrey Maps and it seems to specialise in old maps. I have seen the sort of thing you are after in the tourism office in Newcastle. They certainly have old maps, but I'm not sure if they go into street detail. I'll have another look next time I'm up there! Can anyone else help? While looking on-line I came across this reference to a new book about Scotswood Road which might interest you:

Hello Sue! Love the new site, lots of good links. I passed your site on to a few people in my address book. I found a few old school friends using friendsreunited.co.uk Great site. The site is getting better and better, well done Sue. I used to live right next to Thornhill Comprehensive, came out here in 1982 for work. I am trying to track down a friend of mine in Sunderland or at least I think he still lives there. His name is Phillip Maven and he lived on Eden Vale Road at the time. If anyone has any info please Email me.
