Two arrested after hit and run death

April 17, 2002

Police on Teesside have arrested two people in connection with the death of a six-year-old girl in a hit-and-run.

Leonie Shaw suffered severe head, back and internal injuries in the incident in Bishop Auckland, County Durham, on Saturday.

Police took the unusual step of naming a couple they wanted to speak to in connection with the incident.

Officers from Cleveland Police arrested two people yesterday morning in Middlesbrough.

Forensic tests Inspector Dave Hammond, from Durham Police, said they were not looking for anyone else in connection with Leonie's death.

Leonie, of St Cuthbert's Walk, Bishop Auckland, was trying to cross a busy road to buy some sweets when she was struck and flung into the opposite carriageway just a few hundred yards from her home.

She died on Sunday morning. Police found the car which was believed to have been involved in the incident on Monday.

It was taken to a police compound for forensic tests to be carried out yesterday.
