The week gone by

The Queen Mother died peacefully in her sleep at 3.15pm on Saturday, March 30. A Palace spokesman said she had become increasingly frail in recent weeks following a chest infection over Christmas. She died at the Royal Lodge in Windsor. The Queen was at her bedside. Tribute to the Queen Mother

Newcastle and Gateshead launched their joint bid to be European capital of culture in 2008. A ten-year programme of events is planned including a world festival of traditional music and the biggest display of Roman artefacts ever mounted.
