April 16, 2002 People living in the Perth Street area of Hartlepool have joined forces to reclaim their streets from yobs and create a better home for youngsters.
They have formed a new residents' association and are working with the council in a bid to create a better neighbourhood.
In the past the area of town, off Raby Road, has been plagued by problems such as drug taking, burglaries, fly-tipping and joy riding in the back streets.
Residents blamed many of the problems on private landlords who allowed anyone to move into their properties or failed to maintain and safeguard empty houses.
But now the Brougham Area Residents' Association has been formed and is working with many of the landlords and hoping to return community spirit to the area.
In Perth Street, as well as ridding the area of anti-social behaviour, the residents are also working hard to create facilities for youngsters.
Three years ago they joined together to buy plants to improve the look of the area. They also hope to turn a derelict common at the top of Perth Street into a children's play area.
A council spokesman said the Pride in Hartlepool committee had approved a grant of up to £500 to supply plants, hanging baskets, compost and hand tools to maintain and improve the area.
