April 16, 2002 Campaigners hoping to keep the Blue Circle cement works in Weardale open are about to make their final plea direct to the French owners. The plant is due to close on August 9 with all jobs going by the end of the year. Tonight a coach will leave Stanhope to take more than 30 people, a petition, and a bag of Weardale cement to the Lafarge headquarters in Paris.
April 16, 2002 Darlington Taxi drivers are threatening strike action for the second time in a month. Two weeks ago they protested over the introduction of a new Driving Standards Agency test for cab operators. But now the council is also considering making those with a poor driving record take a police-approved improvement course which costs £150.
Vicars get self-defence training
April 16, 2002 Priests and vicars are being taught how to get streetwise at a seminar in Durham. A new survey of clergy and their staff across the county has revealed one in three has been attacked, verbally or physically. Now more than 100 priests, ministers and wardens are at Ushaw College to learn how to protect themselves from assailants.
