My husband would say I have a knitting "problem," but I would say I have found a really relaxing and fun hobby. (OK, I'm obsessed.) I must make stuff. Unlike my other hobbies, knitting can can demand all of your attention or very little of it. If you are doing complex stitch patterns, you're not going to be able to chat or watch TV at the same time. If you are doing a simple stitch you can do both! My other hobbies require my full concentration while doing them.
Working with fiber, especially if you can occasionally splurge on a nice yarn, is intoxicating. (I do this far too often; my stash is obscene.) I can safely say that my mail man hates me because he's always having to get out of his little truck and deliver a box to my door. Sorry, dude. Anyway, I have a great list of links for you to peruse. I am a beginner myself and have only been knitting since Fall 2000. I decided I would try to learn to knit so I could make some scarves and an afghan for my family for Christmas and kept at it. Now I've finished enough non-hideous projects to have a finished objects category (well, coming soon anyway). My first sweater was horrendous (it looked fine except for the torso which flared out like the base of a triangle), but I'm so proud of it! I call it the "garbage bag" sweater, which describes its elegant shaping. ;-)
