I have been a public relations/marketing writer for about 13 years and now I am hurling myself into the world of counseling and social work. I work full-time and go to school part-time. I should graduate in 2 years.
My Volunteer Organizations/Special Projects:
The Names Project. I volunteer as media coordinator for the East Tennessee Chapter of the Names Project, the organization that coordinates the AIDS Memorial Quilt. We take the Quilt to schools and public venues to educate the public about HIV/AIDS. Unfortunately with the current restructuring of the national foundation, many chapters have disbanded. We will probably see the same occur in our chapter.
Animal Abuse Prevention Task Force. This is a new task force under the Community Coalition Against Family Violence in Knoxville that strives to bridge the gap between animal and human violence. A lot of research shows a strong correlation between the two. Often when animal abuse exists in the home, other abuse is happening as well. By helping both animal and human resource agencies together we can do a better job of identifying problems. (Update: Since surgery, I haven't returned to being an active member of this task force, but I left it here because I think they're work is important.)
Social Work Ethics Website. I created and still maintain a website with ethics information for both social work students and professionals. Note: if you try to access the journals, it's best to copy the title into ProQuest; the database links change every few days and I've given up on trying to keep them updated.
