Released twenty years ago, this movie on the
theme of the fantastic adventures in the style of comics, continues to be on
the charts for an american audience nowadays. The issue of this film on DVD,
when this kind of video equipment has become available to everyone, only
confirms this statement.
Timothy Dalton impersonated prince Barin on
the one of the dreamlike planets in a far galaxy there - this was supporting role.
The hero of the movie and the adventures too, Earthman Flash Gordon, beeing
"a guest" on the planet, brings with him into this world not only the beauty
and juvenile ardour, but the kindness and humaneness. Just they vanquish the
evil, at least in this movie.
Max von Zudov portrayed the part of the main
villain and all the events of the movie happened under the accompaniment of
most popular at that time group "Queen". If you'll remember the main precept
of the English theatre: "It's not important what to play, but how to do it…",
then the success of the movie for audience becomes apparent.
The two scenes with the participation of Barin
and Flash are indelibly photographed on my memory - the single fight of them
with a Beast from the old snag and the battle on the rotatable in the
different planes plate under Walton's control. In the scene of the single
fight Timothy Dalton shows the prince character ambiguously: he is brave and
is ready for the honest duel, but he can do a slime at the same time. The
battle scene on the rotating plate with the bobbed up from it surface knifes
at every moment when Walton want it, was done by dramatic actors, who play
without second string and as good as ballet actors.

But there is another view to this movie...
Timothy Dalton - to children
For many years, after viewing American films,
I was distressed about the secret of American people. I could not understand
how that nation could achieve the great results in science and technics?
Judging by its lovely films US nation at all comprises the people with
problems of intellect. May be the immigrants from Europe continent, where
the interesting and serious cinema is most popular, do all intellectual work
in US? I don't know..
The film "Flash-Gordon" doesn't look so bad,
because it is the film for 7 -10 years old children. To this decision you can
come not because of it's low intellectual charge (here it does not differ so
much from the majority of american movies), but because of absence the
naturalistic scenes of the violence and sex. You can't hear rough words here
too.
Certainly, as one Russia thinker said, the
actors must play for children as good as for adult, and better than for adult.
However in practice we see the inverse situation. Although Flash Gordon's subject
is very lowlife, children with there desire to get the new knowledge about the
outworld could gollop the much greater stupidity.
The film "Flash Gordon" itself is a catena of
standart US platitudes. The main hero - Flash Gordon can play baseball well
and it helps him to beat saucerman soldiers, kill it's emperor and save our
planet. The main idea - the most important thing in our life is skill in
playing baseball. Moreover, any intellectual work is very dangerous. Danger
from Earth science is the main reason for emperor resolution to destroy Earth.
Yes, in this film scientist was episodically helpful, but this situation is
not typical for US films.
Timothy Dalton shows us the other way to
success. This way is a good skill in shoot, beat and in flourishing of a sword.
To my mind prince Barin isn't a part for Timothy Dalton, because we can see
pensive eyes and mind in his eyes. The best choice for this hero - Silvester
Stallone, who has the ideal whole eyes, eyes with any kind of intellect. For the
other hand it may be done specially to show children, that physical force is
the most important thing for clever man too.
First and last, Timothy Dalton had personated
his second plan role very well nevertheless film's director didn't demand
overmuch. All the popular actors play in films for children and, as a rule,
these roles aren't the best in their careers. The film "Flash Gordon" is the
Timothy Dalton's gift to US children.
